Life without water is unimaginable. Safe drinking water is a fundamental right for people. Bangladesh has an abundance of water, with around 24,000 km of rivers flowing through its fertile land. But in regards to access of safe drinking water; almost 4.3 million people are deprived which means they are unable to frequently wash their hands and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Majority of the Sundarbans coastal people are lacked of safe drinking water. They mainly depend on rain water and pond water for their drinking purpose. In summer, water level of the ponds gets lower and sometimes dried. So, people have to drink saline water. In maximum cases, they drink pond water directly without even purifying it. So, marginal people fall in waterborne diseases like diarrhea and dysentery.

Realizing this condition, Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) started safe drinking water support activities in 2015. BEDS introduced 3 solar powered Pond Sand and Filter system and in three villages of Sundarbans coastal region. BEDS also introduced two Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems with Water ATM. Almost 4,594 villagers are getting safe drinking water from our established facilities. Last year, BEDS has also established 7 water wells in Khulna and Bagerhat districts of Bangladesh. From those water wells; around 3000 villagers are getting safe drinking water.

But a big number of villagers are still deprived of safe drinking water in our target area i.e. Banishanta union under Dacope sub district of Khulna district in Bangladesh where 16,124 people live in. We want to establish 2 more RO system with Water ATMs for the better access of villagers towards safe drinking water sources. But it is you, our kind hearted donors; who can make this possible. So, we are requesting all our donors to stand beside the poor coastal deprived villagers. It is also our request to all our donors to start monthly recurring donation from now.

Safe drinking water is a fundamental right for people. But unfortunately, 780 million people of the world do not have access to improved or safe drinking water sources(https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/global/wash_statistics.html#:~:text=An%20estimated%20790%20million%20people,access%20to%20adequate%20sanitation%2015.). Most of the people of Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh are lacked of safe drinking water. In maximum cases, they drink pond water directly without even purifying it. As a result, those marginal people fall in trouble and suffer much.

Considering the situation, Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) started safe drinking water support activities in 2015. BEDS tried to improve the traditional water purification technique (Pond Sand and Filter system) and established 3 Solar powered Pond Sand and Filter systems in three villages of Sundarbans coastal region. BEDS also introduced two Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems with Water ATM. Around 4594 villagers are getting safe drinking water from our support. But huge numbers of villagers are still deprived of safe drinking water. We should do something for those underprivileged people. World Water Day-2021 is coming very soon (22 March). So, we are requesting all our donors to stand beside the poor coastal deprived villagers on that occasion. It is also our request to all our donors to start monthly recurring donation from now. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is a community based non-profit, non-government and development organization. BEDS has been working in the Sundarbans coastal region since 2013 for the socio-economic development of the coastal people. BEDS has been trying to provide safe drinking water to the climate vulnerable underprivileged Sundarbans coastal community since 2015. We have re-excavated 3 ponds and established Solar Pond Sand and filter system and supported 4594 villagers. But due to the salinity of that water, BEDS is trying to raise the required fund to support those people with desalinated water (3 desalination system). It is widely known that desalination is a harmful system for the environment if the ground water is desalinated. The people of the locality live from hand to mouth, so they cannot afford to buy mineral water. They have to depend on rain water. But after the monsoon they have to use the nearby pond’s water for drinking purpose and they suffer from various kinds of water contaminated diseases.

Realizing the situation and according to the request of the deprived communities, we started working to establish Reverse Osmosis water purification system with Water ATM in Paschim Dhangmari and Uttor Banishanta village. Two 500 liter/hour Reverse Osmosis Water Purification systems with Water ATM are installed by using the existing facilities (Solar Pond Sand and Filter system). As a result the 45% people of the Banishanta Union are now getting access to pure drinking water. After installing the Reverse Osmosis Water Purification systems water contaminated diseases like cholera, dysentery, jaundice etc are ‍about to disappear. Recently we have distributed 200 water jars among the villagers.

Target grant of this project is 30,560$. So far, 7,677$ is raised from 58 admirable donations. We are extremely grateful to the donors for being with us. And we expect that they will continuously help us for what we are aiming at.

We know it is you; the kind hearted donors, who can make it possible to help the coastal people to provide them safe drinking water. So, please be kind to the safe drinking water deprived communities and be with them.

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is a community based non-profit, non-government and development organization. BEDS has eight thematic areas for work in which safe drinking water is one of them. BEDS has been trying to provide safe drinking water to the climate vulnerable underprivileged Sundarbans coastal community since 2015.

A total of three ponds have been re-excavated and Solar Pond Sand and filter systems have been established to support 4,494 people of three villages of Banishanta union under Dacope sub district of Khulna district of Bangladesh. But due to salinity of that water, BEDS is trying to raise the required fund to support the underprivileged Sundarbans coastal people with desalinated water (3 desalination system).

In these circumstances, BEDS realized the necessity of pure drinking water for the coastal people and established Reverse Osmosis water purification systems with Water ATM in Paschim Dhangmari and Uttor Banishanta village. Two 500 liter/hour Reverse Osmosis Water Purification systems with Water ATM are installed by using the existing facilities (Solar Pond Sand and Filter system). As a result the 45% people of the Banishanta Union are now getting access to pure drinking water. But this is not sufficient for the large coastal community. After installing the Reverse Osmosis Water Purification systems water contaminated diseases like cholera, dysentery, jaundice etc are ‍about to disappear. in the year 2020, we distributed 200 water jars among the villagers.

Target grant of this project is 30,560$. So far 7,677$ is raised from 58 admirable donations. We are extremely grateful to the donors for being with us. And we expect that they will continuously help us for what we are aiming at.

We want to thank our donors for their contribution. Here we would like to request all our donors that if you want to support the deprived coastal people of the Sundarbans region of Bangladesh, please start monthly recurring donation.
