Bangladesh is a low-lying country. Here water is everywhere. But pure drinking water is not available everywhere. During the monsoon, rain water is used for drinking and people store water for the dry season. But this is not sufficient for them. In the dry season water level goes down and most of the ponds get dry. As a result, people suffer a lot for drinking water and they suffer from various kinds of water contaminated diseases.
Initiative:BEDS has been trying to provide safe drinking water to the climate vulnerable underprivileged Sundarbans coastal community since 2015. We have re-excavated 3 ponds and established Solar Pond Sand and filter system. BEDS has installed 2 Reverse Osmosis water purification systems with Water ATM in Paschim Dhangmari and Uttor Banishanta village. 35 water wells have also been installed. So, more than 45,000 coastal villagers are getting safe drinking water from our service.
Impact: As a result, the 65% people of Sundarbans Coastal area are now getting access to pure drinking water. But this is not sufficient for the large coastal community. Now we are trying to ensure safe drinking water to 100% people of Sundarbans coastal area. We are processing to install more 25 water wells at a time. Now water contaminated diseases like cholera, dysentery, etc. are about to disappear from the supported villages.
Feedbacks from the beneficiaries:This is Mondal. I live in Shialidanga Village. I earn my livelihood by catching fish from the Sundarbans. Generally, I go to fish for 15-20 days and stay in the Sundarbans. Most of time I suffer from various kinds of water contaminated diseases and it hampers my fishing activities. I take water from the newly installed water well of Shialidanga and I get relax from the water contaminated diseases during my fishing period.
