The project area is located at Banishanta union of Dacope Sub district in Khulna district adjacent to the Sundarbans mangrove forest. Water is a fundamental resource for life and livelihood. But safe water is scarce in the coastal area of Bangladesh. The coastal people have to depend on rain water. In the summer season there is no rain and they are bound to drink nearby ponds and canals water. As a result, most of the people suffer from various kinds of water contaminated diseases.

Initiative:Greenery all around but there is no source of pure drinking water. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS)has been trying to provide safe drinking water. We have selected 3 ponds and re-excavated. By using the local technology we have established Solar Pond Sand and filter (PSF) system for water purification. The quality of water doesn't fulfill the drinking standard. So BEDS has installed 2 Reverse Osmosis water purification systems with Water ATM in Paschim Dhangmari and Uttor Banishanta village. 7 water wells have also been installed. Now BEDS has been providing door to door safe drinking water with minimum charge in Banishanta and Laudove union and we are planning to install 8 more water wells in different coastal villages.

Impact: Most of the coastal people used pond water for drinking and cooking purposes and they could not think about the reverse osmosis purified water. But the situation became change after installing the Reverse Osmosis System, more than 9000 coastal villagers are now getting safe drinking water at a cheap rate which is only 0.5 TK per liter. The rate of water contaminated diseases is going to disappear. This little charge is taken for the maintenance cost of water production so that this activity will sustain in the long run process.

Feedbacks from the beneficiaries: Mr. Pramanik who lives in the Sundarban Coastal area expressed his feelings about the reverse osmosis water. Very recent the cyclone - ”Yaas” hit over the coastal area and most of the area flooded by saline water. Our water sources have gone under water so we are facing drinking water crisis. At this time BEDS Reverse Osmosis system is the only source of pure drinking water for us. BEDS not only provide pure drinking water at door to door but also save our lives. We are grateful to BEDS for such a tremendous initiative in this coastal area.

We would like to thank all our donors for their amazing and continuous support for the coastal deprived people. We are requesting all our donors to start monthly recurring donation by clicking the following link;

Feedbacks from the beneficiaries: A housewife Mrs. Roy expressed her feelings about the reverse osmosis water. My family consists of 4 members. I have 2 little children. Before, I used pond’s water for drinking and household purposes. As a result, they suffered from various kinds of water born diseases and their sufferings knew no bounds. Every month, we used to spend a lot of money for visiting doctors and also for medicine purpose for the children. After using RO water from BEDS, now my children are well and they are free from all kinds of water contaminated diseases. Now they can concentrate on their education.

The project area is located at Banishanta union of Dacope Sub district in Khulna district adjacent to the Sundarbans mangrove forest. Here is water everywhere but the water is not fit for drinking. Ground water is not available in this coastal area. The coastal people have to depend on rain water. In the summer season there is no rain and they are bound to drink nearby ponds and canals water. As a result, most of the people suffer from various kinds of water contaminated diseases. They cannot afford to buy mineral water because they live below the poverty line.

Feedbacks from the beneficiaries: One person expressed his feeling who lives in village adjacent to the Sundarbans. This is Mondal and I earn my livelihood by catching fish from the Sundarbans. Generally I go to fish for 15-20 days and stay in the Sundarbans. Most of time I suffer from various kinds of water contaminated diseases and it hampers my fishing activities. Now I take water from the RO plant of BEDS and I get relax from the water contaminated diseases during my fishing period. I can catch more fish and earn more money.

Feedbacks from the beneficiaries: One person expressed his feeling who is engaged in water production and distribution process. If I want to live a healthy life, there is no alternative of safe water. That's why I consider myself as a water servant of BEDS. I have learnt how to operate the total RO System. I always take care the machine and after 15 days I change the filter. I try to produce more water and reserve in the tank so that the beneficiaries can get water any time. Now about 45% people of the Banishanta and Laudove Union are now getting access to pure drinking water. From this water service I can earn my livelihood and take care my family as well.

Water is a natural resource but safe drinking water is limited. Its service has to be paid for.In Sundarbans, coastal region of Bangladesh, saline water is everywhere with limited fresh water sources. The coastal people have to depend on rainwater. They store water in plastic tank and traditional mud made pots in the monsoon which goes run short by two or three months.

In these circumstances, BEDS has been providing door to door safe drinking water with minimum charge in Banishanta and Laudove union. As a result, more than 20 villages of these unions are getting safe drinking water. Local people are now free from all kinds of water borne diseases.

There is no alternative of water for healthy living. As a result of global warming, the summer season is getting longer and longer and drought is increasing day by day. Besides, they use water in the agricultural production. As a result, rivers, canals and ponds become dry. Extreme water crisis appears then. Through the existing facilities of BEDS (Solar Pond Sand and filter, Reverse Osmosis and 7 water wells) more than 9000 coastal villagers are getting safe drinking water. Now we are selecting sites for installing 8 more water wells in different coastal villages.
