Strengthening Hygiene and Infection Prevention

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Thanks to your generous support, Development Alert has continued promoting hygiene and infection-prevention practices among families and community members living in vulnerable areas of Uganda, particularly communities connected to the Uganda–DRC border.

The current Ebola emergency demonstrates why community-level prevention remains essential. The DRC outbreak has now surpassed 5,000 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths, making it the country's deadliest Ebola outbreak to date. Uganda has successfully brought its outbreak under control, but continued preparedness remains critical because the two countries are linked through population movement and cross-border activity.

Our community activities emphasize practical behaviors such as appropriate hand hygiene, environmental cleanliness, safe practices around illness, early reporting, and cooperation with health authorities. We also encourage community members to avoid stigmatizing people who may have been exposed to Ebola and to support affected families in seeking appropriate care.

These interventions are helping communities understand that preparedness is not only the responsibility of health professionals. Families, schools, businesses, transport operators, local leaders, and community organizations all have important roles to play.

Your support makes this grassroots prevention work possible. By helping communities access reliable information and adopt safer practices, you are contributing to stronger public health protection.

Thank you for your continued compassion and partnership. Together, we are helping communities remain vigilant, informed, and better prepared to respond to Ebola and other public health emergencies.
