The DRC Ebola Outbreak Escalates

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear our beloved donor,

The successful end of Uganda's Ebola outbreak is a moment of hope, but the escalating situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo reminds us that the regional emergency is far from over. Uganda recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths and successfully interrupted transmission after an intensive national response. WHO has now confirmed that Uganda completed the required period without new transmission.

Across the border, however, the DRC is experiencing one of the most serious Ebola emergencies in its history. Recent reporting indicates that confirmed cases have exceeded 5,500, with more than 2,700 deaths. The outbreak is spreading rapidly across several provinces, while insecurity, population displacement, limited infrastructure, misinformation, and shortages of response resources continue making containment difficult.

Development Alert continues to prioritize vulnerable border communities through community-based health education and preparedness. Our volunteers work to ensure that households receive accurate information about Ebola prevention, early reporting, hygiene, and the importance of seeking appropriate healthcare.

We are also engaging community leaders, teachers, transport operators, religious leaders, women, and youth because these groups have trusted relationships within their communities. Their involvement helps counter misinformation, reduce stigma, and encourage residents to cooperate with health authorities.

Handwashing and hygiene promotion remain important components of our preparedness activities. Community facilities such as schools, markets, boda boda stages, and public gathering points provide opportunities to reinforce practical prevention messages.

Our field motorcycle remains an essential tool for reaching remote communities quickly. It supports outreach, follow-up, emergency preparedness, and delivery of supplies and educational materials.

Uganda's achievement proves that decisive action can stop Ebola. The continuing crisis in the DRC shows why that action must be sustained. Your continued support enables Development Alert to stand with communities on both sides of this regional health emergency.
