The Bantay Bata 163 team conducted a five-day Child Safe Communities Training in the Municipality of Lobo, Batangas, attended by 26 barangay functionaries, local government representatives, barangay chairpersons, and barangay councilors. The training focused on strengthening participants’ knowledge and capacity in child protection, beginning with an introduction to the Child Safe Community framework, its legal foundations, and ways to initiate child protection efforts at the barangay level. Participants also learned about child abuse, its effects, appropriate community responses, and children’s mental health, and developed child abuse prevention strategies that could be implemented in their respective barangays. The training also featured an interactive session on positive discipline or “discipline without pain,” reminding participants of their own experiences as children and the importance of nurturing and compassionate approaches to discipline.
The succeeding sessions highlighted the roles and responsibilities of barangays in child protection, including the development of protocols for responding to child abuse cases. On the final day, participants drafted three-year child protection action plans for their respective barangays, with the goal of strengthening child protection efforts and mechanisms in their communities over the next three years. The Bantay Bata 163 team also shared best practices from barangays in Pola, Mindoro, providing practical examples that participants could adapt to their own communities. Through the training, barangay leaders were equipped with knowledge, strategies, and concrete plans to help create safer and more child-friendly communities. It takes a village to raise a child.
