Charmaghz is an Afghan education non-profit based in Kabul that has run mobile libraries for marginalized children since 2018. Now more than ever, we believe Afghan children have a right to quality education as well as a peaceful future--both of which must begin with a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy. We are doubling-down on our commitment to support Afghan children to develop critical skills in reading, writing, and basic maths. Our country's future depends on it.
Just 7% of children in Afghanistan can read by the age of 10, and nearly 4 million school-age children are out of school entirely. Children who do not learn to read, write, and do basic maths in early grades are at a profound disadvantage for the rest of their lives. At the same time, the multiple crises facing Afghanistan make it increasingly difficult for local, grassroots organizations such as Charmaghz to raise the funds needed to address this literacy emergency.
Since 2018, over half a million children have visited our libraries, making Charmaghz the most visited children's library in the country. Building on this track record, we are now launching a new literacy and numeracy program in schools in Kabul. Our program takes a unique, trauma-centred approach to support children to learn to read, write, and do basic maths. In our first year of piloting the program, we aim to reach 200 students in 5 schools, and hope to scale in coming years.
We believe that ensuring all Afghan children can read, write, and do basic maths will have a transformative impact on their futures--as well as on the future of the country. Children must have these foundational skills in order to effectively participate in further education. We also believe that literacy and numeracy are key first steps towards developing the critical thinking and peacebuilding skills that children need to become agents of change in their communities.
