Essential Healthcare for the Most Vulnerable

By Siavash Rahbari | Member, Board of Advisers

Autumn greetings!

In Afghanistan, children with disabilities face immense challenges—many are abandoned, orphaned, or denied access to education and essential care. ECI Care Home offers a safe, nurturing residential home for 29 abandoned and orphaned children and youth with disabilities, providing shelter, education, physiotherapy, psychosocial support and medical care.

The medical care that is provided by ECI Care Home for these children is essential, both to save their lives and to prevent terrible suffering. These children are more prone to injuries and associated illnesses due to their conditions. Just in the last month, different children have been treated for a leg fracture, replacement of catheters, leukopenia, esophageal ulcers, pangastritis, and duodenal aphthous ulcers.

The caregivers at the Care Home have been trained and remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure that illnesses and injuries are recognized and treated early and do not result in further injuries or suffering.

Still, medical care in Afghanistan—as everywhere else—is very expensive and there is no means of insuring the children individually or the Care Home as a whole. This is especially the case for the specialized care that is often required for the ECI children. Even when there are no emergencies, the costs associated with medication required to treat most of the children make up a substantial portion of the ECI Care Home budget.

It is only through your support that we are able to make sure that these children can receive the treatment they need and deserve.

Thank you for your support,

ECI Team
