Empowering & Changes Livelihood of Women with Disabilities through Tailoring & Handicrafts
PROTIBANADHI SHISHU SHIEKKHA O PARICHARJA SAMITY (PROSHIPS)
Location: Jamalpur District, Riverine Areas of Jamuna. PROSHIPS is a women-led, nonprofit, and voluntary organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for women with disabilities in the disaster-prone river basin areas of the Jamuna River in Jamalpur district, Bangladesh. The communities we serve are among the most vulnerable, frequently affected by floods and river erosion, which worsen poverty and displace families. Women with disabilities in these areas face compounded challenges — limited mobility, lack of income opportunities, social stigma, and exclusion from mainstream development efforts.
To address these challenges and support sustainable livelihoods, During the reporting Period PROSHIPS implemented a skills development program focusing on tailoring, sewing, and handicraft production, especially targeting women with disabilities. This initiative is designed to promote economic independence, restore dignity, and foster long-term resilience.
Organization Activities Conducted are - Skill Training on Tailoring & Handicrafts: Conducted 3-month vocational training on tailoring and basic handicrafts for 30 women with disabilities and provided training materials, sewing machines, threads, and fabrics. Home-Based Business Setup: Post-training, 20 women received startup support with sewing machines and materials to work from home. Continuous mentoring and market linkage assistance provided by PROSHIPS. Awareness & Community Engagement: Organized local events to showcase women’s products and raise community awareness about the capabilities of women with disabilities. Promoted inclusive practices and women’s rights in disaster-prone areas.
Results Achieved from above mention activities are - 15 women trained in tailoring and handicraft making. 10 women now earn income by stitching clothes and selling handicrafts from home. Monthly income increased by 2,000–5,000 BDT per woman.Women are now supporting their families, contributing to household expenses, education, and health.Community perception has shifted positively towards women with disabilities as productive contributors. One participant said: “I never imagined I could earn from my home. Now I stitch clothes for others and help my family. I feel proud and independent.” While the progress is inspiring, many more women with disabilities are still waiting for an opportunity to transform their lives. With your support, PROSHIPS can expand this initiative to reach an additional 100 women in other vulnerable river basin communities.
Finally we appeal to donors for generous support to: Sponsor more training sessions in tailoring and handicrafts. Provide sewing machines and toolkits to newly trained women, establish a community sewing center to enhance income-generating capacity.Your contribution can make the difference between survival and dignity for a woman with disabilities.
