Support, Build 15Women Poultry Enterprise.

Save The Pastoralists (STP) designed this project to transform the lives of 15 vulnerable women who previously depended on charcoal burning and illicit brewing for survival. These harmful coping strategies were targeted for replacement with a sustainable and dignified livelihood through poultry farming. The initiative aimed to address environmental degradation, household poverty, and social vulnerability simultaneously. However, these intended outcomes have not been realized due to insufficient funding.

The lack of adequate financial resources prevented the procurement of 2,000 chicken layers, which formed the core of the poultry enterprise. Without the birds, the women could not begin income-generating activities or transition away from destructive livelihoods. This funding gap stalled the entire production cycle before it could take off. As a result, the women continue to face economic insecurity and limited livelihood options.

In addition, critical infrastructure components were not implemented because of the funding shortfall. STP was unable to construct the planned poultry shelter, procure a water tank, or build the underground water storage facility needed to ensure a reliable water supply. Essential equipment, such as chicken feeders, drinkers, and starter feed for the first six months, was also not secured. These gaps made it impossible to establish a functional and sustainable poultry unit.

Furthermore, the project could not deliver the planned capacity-building and training necessary to ensure long-term sustainability. The women missed out on vital skills in poultry management, business planning, and disease control that would have strengthened resilience and self-reliance. Consequently, the project’s positive social, economic, and environmental impacts remain unrealized. Adequate funding would have enabled STP to fully implement these activities and significantly improve the livelihoods and dignity of the targeted women

This project will establish a poultry enterprise for 15 women who were formerly dependent on charcoal burning and illicit brewing for survival. When the project activities are funded, a 2,000 chicken-layer poultry project will be initiated to provide them with a sustainable livelihood. This shift will enable the women to support their families with dignity while moving away from harmful practices.

When funding is secured, the project will begin with the construction of a modern poultry shelter to house the 2,000 chickens. It will also include the installation of an underground tank and the procurement of a water tank to ensure a sustainable water supply. These facilities will provide the essential infrastructure for effective poultry management.

Upon receipt of funding, the project will procure poultry equipment, including feeders and drinkers, to ensure proper management of the chickens. It will also purchase 320 bags of 90-kilogramme feeds to sustain the poultry enterprise for the initial six months. These provisions will ensure the productivity and smooth operation of the project.

When the project is funded, capacity-building training will be conducted for the 15 women to equip them with poultry farming and enterprise management skills. This training will enable them to operate the poultry project effectively and sustainably. In the long term, the project will improve livelihoods, reduce harmful practices, and promote environmental conservation.
