Project Overview .
Save The Pastoralists Kenya (STP) initiated plans to establish a poultry enterprise for 15 women previously engaged in charcoal burning and illicit brewing as their primary source of income. The project was designed to empower these women by transitioning them into sustainable livelihoods through a 2,000-layer poultry initiative.
Key planned components included:
Construction of a poultry shelter and an underground water tank
Procurement of a water tank, chicken feeders, and drinkers
Acquisition of 320 bags of 90-kilogram feed to sustain the project for six months
Delivery of comprehensive capacity-building training for the 15 women
Intended Impact.
The project aimed to:
Enhance household food security
Improve income generation for women and their families
Provide a dignified and sustainable alternative to harmful economic activities
Strengthen community resilience through inclusive economic empowerment
Challenges Encountered.
Despite a strong vision and a clear implementation plan, the project has not achieved its intended goals due to insufficient funding and donor support. Without adequate resources, critical infrastructure, and inputs, the women could not secure them, leaving them without the opportunity to transition into poultry farming.
Call to Action.
STP appeals to donors, partners, and well-wishers to support this initiative. With your contribution, we can:
Provide the necessary infrastructure and inputs to launch the poultry enterprise
Equip the women with training and resources to ensure sustainability
Transform vulnerable households by securing food and income stability
Conclusion.
This project represents a vital opportunity to uplift women, reduce reliance on harmful livelihoods, and foster sustainable community development. With donor support, STP can turn this vision into reality and create a lasting impact for pastoralist families.
