Save The Pastoralists Kenya (STP) supports disadvantaged pastoralist women in Turkana who have lost their traditional way of life due to drought, conflict, and lack of financial resources. Many of these women have turned to charcoal burning and illicit brewing to survive. These activities have harmful impacts on both the environment and public health.
Charcoal burning has damaged Turkana’s riverine areas and fragile ecosystems, leading to deforestation and land degradation. This worsens the effects of climate change and reduces the availability of natural resources. The loss of trees and vegetation also increases the region's vulnerability to future droughts.
Illicit brewing has become a widespread issue affecting women, youth, and men in the community. It has led to an increase in deaths and a rise in HIV infections due to unsafe practices. This poses a serious health risk and adds to the region’s social challenges.
To provide a better alternative, the project plans to support 15 women with a new livelihood in poultry farming. With the expected funding, the project will supply 2,000 layer chickens, build a poultry shelter, and install a water tank and an underground tank. It will also provide feed, equipment, and six months of support, along with training to help the women run the poultry project sustainably.
