This project will build a poultry enterprise for 15 women who had been involved in charcoal burning and illicit brewing for a living to start a 2000 chicken layers poultry project. The project will also construct a poultry shelter, and an underground tank, procure for the project a water tank, procure chicken feeders, and drinkers, and 320 bags of 90-kilogramme feeds for the 6-month project period, and provide capacity-building training for the 15 women.
Many women whose households have fallen from pastoralism because of droughts and conflicts, and lack of financial support have engaged in charcoal burning and illicit brewing in many areas in Turkana. The burning of charcoal has caused some environmental concerns in Turkana's riverine and other fragile ecosystems. Illicit brewing has become a huge problem among women, youth, and men causing deaths and high incidents of HIV infections.
This project will support 15 women previously engaged in charcoal burning and illicit brewing with a diversified livelihood in poultry farming. The project will procure 2000 chicken layers, construct a poultry shelter, procure a water tank, construct an underground tank, provide chicken feeders and drinkers and chicken feed for 6 months, and provide capacity-building training for sustainability.
The 15 women will benefit from the capacity-building training provided to them to earn relevant skills in leadership, basic bookkeeping, and financial management competencies. These women will have started a sustainable poultry business enterprise that will provide them with food and income to enable them to take their children to school and largely improve their households' food security.
