In the summer of 2016, the STEMulate® Change Outreach Initiative operated at the Community Education Building (CEB) in Wilmington, Delaware. Students who attended the summer session learned about the famous blues singer, musician, and song writer, B.B. King. In doing so, they were engaged in interactive, hands-on STEM activities, including creating their own musical instruments and poems. These activities helped students gain an understanding of the science behind sound (acoustics). Students worked in small groups to complete various projects which helped them form problem-solving skills, enhanced teamwork, self-confidence, and increased knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). At the end of the four week session, students presented what they learned by preforming their songs/poems using their home-made instruments at a Culmination Ceremony which took place on August 5, 2016 at the CEB. During the ceremony, student’s peers, parents, and teachers were present in support of their learning and presentations.

In the fall of 2016, STEMulate® Change began operating at Silverlake Elementary School in Middletown, Delaware on September 14, 2016. The eleven week session will focus on Dr. Guillermo Gonzalez, a Cuban astronomer who pioneered the intelligent design of astrophysics. Through the STEMulate® Change Outreach Initiative, students will work in teams to learn and study the solar system and wider universe while also designing/engineering model solar systems. In addition to programming at Silverlake Elementary School, STEMulate® Change is slated to operate at Richardson Park Elementary School, Stanton Middle School, and the Police Athletic Leagues (PAL) in Delaware City, New Castle, and Hockessin throughout the fall of 2016.
