Forum to Advance Minorities in Engineering, Inc.’s (FAME, Inc.) STEMulate® Change Outreach Initiative provides Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning opportunities for students in grades K-6. Using nationally accredited curricula highlighting females and other underrepresented American and Global Icons, STEMulate® Change engages youth in Project Based Learning (PBL) methods which motivate students to increase engagement in STEM subjects and build skills to pursue STEM related careers. During the Fall/Winter of 2018, nearly 100 STEMulate® Change students have been engaged in rigorous PBL lessons that promote hands-on activities and STEM learning!
Fall/Winter 2018 sessions operate in New Castle County and include four Wilmington, Delaware schools: Thomas Edison Charter School (TECS), Heritage Elementary School, Mote Elementary School, and Baltz Elementary School. Sessions began on 10/29/2018 and ran through 12/20/2018. In total, FAME, Inc. offered 59 sessions of STEM programming. Sessions are typically 1-hour in length and are held two times per week for seven weeks.
FAME, Inc. is highlighting several of our 4th and 5th grade students from TECS. Students are engaged in STEM learning via a “Sink or Float” experiment. During this experience, students were tasked with making predictions as to whether or not different ordinary objects will float. Objects tested for mass index include: fruits, vegetables, plastic ware, and bottles filled with varying amounts of water. FAME, Inc. is happy our students were able to have such a fun and hands-on learning experience. We are greatly looking forward to 2019 and would like to wish everyone from our Global Giving family a Happy Holiday and New Year!
