STEMulate Change for At-Risk Youth

Forum to Advance Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (FAME, Inc.) wrapped our 2018 STEMulate® Change Summer Sessions with a Culmination Ceremony that took place on Thursday, July 26^th at John Dickinson High School. Summer Sessions for STEMulate® Change students (grades 4^th to 6^th) were held from Monday, June 18^th in through Thursday, July 26^th. Daily sessions took place from 8am to 3pm, Monday through Thursday. 2018 marked the second year FAME, Inc. was able to offer our six week Summer Sessions for STEMulate® Change students. During the summer of 2017, FAME, Inc. launched the program for students in STEMulate® Change. The six week Summer Sessions were a highly successful pilot program and in 2018, the program was replicated throughout the summer months while students were out-of-school. FAME, Inc. was not only able to continue Summer Sessions for STEMulate® Change, we were also able to grow the program 50% from 60 student enrolled in 2017 to 90 enrolled students in 2018!

In addition to wrapping the 2018 Summer Sessions, STEMulate® Change is falling into our autumn program schedule. On Thursday, September 27^th FAME, Inc. attended the Baltz Elementary School’s "Back to School Open House" celebration to promote STEMulate® Change sessions. School year programming for Baltz Elementary students (grades 4^th and 5^th) will take place during after-school hours two times per week. Sessions will be held from October, 2018 in through December, 2018!

Forum to Advance Minorities in Engineering’s (FAME, Inc.) STEMulate® Change Outreach Initiative provides educational experiences for students by exposing them to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning opportunities. This program is designed to engage and excite young students so they can see themselves in STEM classes and careers. Throughout the summer of 2018, STEMulate® Change participants will be engaged in rigorous Problem Based Learning (PBL) lessons that promote hands-on activities and learning. Students are able to work in small groups to complete various projects which help them form skills while also increasing their knowledge of STEM concepts/subjects.

2018 Summer Sessions have been taking place at three sites throughout the State of Delaware: 1.) John Dickinson High School in Wilmington; 2.) the Route 9 Library & Innovation Center in New Castle; 3.) and W.T. Chipman Middle School in Harrington. The program at W.T. Chipman was a successful pilot between FAME, Inc. and the Lake Forest School District which allowed 31 students from Kent County, Delaware to be served via STEMulate® Change. The Culmination Ceremony for W.T. Chipman took place on Thursday, June 28^th and was attended by participating students, teachers, family members, and other community stakeholders.   

Summer Sessions at John Dickinson High School are being held over 6 consecutive weeks from Monday, June 18^th in through Thursday, July 26^th. A total of 90 participating students, grades 4-6, are attending programming from Monday to Thursday for 7 hours per day (8am – 3pm). Each participating student at Dickinson is provided daily bus transportation and meals in addition to PLB lessons and activities. Meanwhile, an additional cohort of 70 students, grades 5-8, are attending STEMulate® Change sessions at the Route 9 Library & Innovation Center in New Castle, Delaware. Sessions began on Monday, June 25^th and will conclude on Friday, July 27^th. Throughout the week, sessions take place on three days (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) for 1 hour each day.

FAME, Inc. is one of the nation’s oldest non-profit STEM education organizations. Our 2018 Summer Sessions are developed by FAME, Inc. and run by more than 30 faculty, staff and interns with the goal of exciting and supporting students to succeed in STEM classes and careers!
