Trying to Fulfill Our 2025 Plans

Hello Donors so far the start of the year has been hectic! Youlou Arts Foundation is striving to carry out plans, which were made at the end of 2024.We are sticking to stick to the plan.

The Secondary School Art Competition has been launched. Our goal is to get more students to participate this year. At the end of May we will know how many students participated.

On Saturday, March15, the annual women's art show was launched at the Youlou Art Centre This year the title of the show was "Home". In December of 2024 the Rock Retreat, a non profit, in Gibraltar, reached out to us and asked to be a part of our "Home" show. We decided on having an installation of 'Zines", little unbound books in which women wrote, drew and painted their thoughts about what home meant to them. The zines were then hung from the ceiling. A soundscape was added to the installation. Women were asked to record their thoughts about "Home". This was played throughtout the evening of the opening reception. It made for a very rich and exciting experience. Putting this together required some work but we were able to pull it off. The show is a success and will be up in the Centre until the end of August.

At the moment we are getting ready for another big event slated for Saturday, April 5, the volcano festival which is titled "Ash And Resilience - Highlighting The Beauty Born From Volcanic Power".

Moving Forward After Hurricane Beryl

Donors we are grateful for all your support through the years.

Your faith in our mission is steadfast. You have supported us when we needed you most. Your support has given us the courage to carry on these last several weeks. It has not been easy.

But we have managed to persevere with our mission. Hurricane Beryl passed though St. Vincent and the Grenadines on July 1st. The impact was felt throughout the islands.

Beryl struck a mere fifteen days before we started our annual visual arts programme, which we had been preparing for since September of 2023.

It did not stop us from going forward though. We put our heads down and continued with the 2024 annual visual arts programme. It was not easy, there were lots of hiccups but we did it regardless.

Somehow we managed to have the programme in five locations. It was the first time we were offering the programme in Buccament Bay. Actually we had to relocate the programme from the Buccament Bay school because that school was used as a shelter for hurricane victims. We were able to find another venue in the neighbouring town, Layou.

The Teachers Training Workshop started July 15 and was held through July 19. at the Youlou Art Centre. The workshop did not run smoothly. The necessary art supplies did not arrive on time. It was a setback, which forced us to be creative in realizing the plans we had made for the programme. Finally we did get the much needed art supplies during the first week of the children's programme.

The children were able to make their own individual forest from paper, make books of the wildlife found in forests, and plant a tiny forest in the school grounds of the Tourama Government School. The plan was to plant a total of 3 tiny forests this year, but due to the hurricane the forestry department was unable to give as much help as was promised. The plans for creating the mural in the Uptown Vegetable Market mural, was started but not completed. Each location painted fruits and flowers which would eventually be placed on the market wall. Our plan is to complete the mural in 2025.
