Do you think it's ok for someone with a disability to miss out on equal education opportunities? We don't either. Help us build a comprehensive special needs unit at the largest primary school in Kitengela, Kenya. The unit is so important now, as COVID-19 restrictions mean only 12 of the 40 students can attend class owing to insufficient space. The new unit will provide ample room and the only ambulant toilets in the town. Ken-ya support us?
Kitengela is home to over 150,000 people with an unknown number of children with special needs, and there is only 1 special needs unit. Currently, the 40 enrolled students have a vast array of additional requirements that are not being met. The unit is a 3x5 meter space schooling intellectually and physically disabled children with no appropriate bathrooms or aids. This project will directly impact these 40 students, and the 100s of future students by providing a supporting learning environment.
A comprehensive special needs unit will provide a safe and secure educational space for Kitengela's most vulnerable children. The unit will comprise multiple classrooms and playrooms, an appropriate bathroom block, a kitchen, and an administration block inclusive of a library and therapy room fit-out with medical aids, and stimulating and educational materials.
The simple construction of the special needs unit will begin to tackle the stigma around special needs in the community by welcoming those who are challenged. It will provide a secure space for mothers to leave their children so they can pursue financial independence - something they're unable to do when they're the primary carer of their child. Furthermore, the space will provide a hub for families to seek assistance, advice, and comfort to ease their struggles.
