Challenge

Children with special needs in Kenya face a critical challenge: a severe lack of affordable and appropriate wheelchairs. Without mobility aids that suit their environment, countless children are left immobile, unable to participate in school, family life, or their community, perpetuating cycles of poverty and stigma. Standard wheelchairs, starting at $350, are far out of reach for most families and are not designed for rugged terrain, making them impractical.

Solution

A terrain-specific wheelchair gives a child & mother independence, mobility, & access to community, healthcare & education. Mama Respond ships wheelchairs to Kenya that are kindly donated by world-renowned NFP, Wheelchairs For Kids, who make unique, portable, lightweight & adjustable wheelchairs that feature: - Puncture proof, wide tyres to increase stability - Postural support & harnesses - Adjustable foot & headrest - Waterproof cushion - Tray for mealtimes or school activities.

Long-Term Impact

By providing 166 children in Kenya with appropriate wheelchairs, this project creates a lasting impact. Mobility empowers them to access education, healthcare, and community life, building lifelong independence and skills. These changes enhance their quality of life and increase life expectancy by improving overall health. For caregivers, reduced physical strain and improved well-being allows them to engage more in economic and social activities, creating a positive ripple effect.
