Thank you—we can’t say it enough! Because of your generosity, people struggling in the wake of flash flooding and landslides across the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa were able to quickly access essential supplies and support to rebuild damaged schools and roads.

The South Africa Flood Relief Fund has powered two grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis. Here is a description of the critical work you’ve supported:

  • Waqful Waqifin Foundation (Gift of the Givers Foundation) mobilized search and rescue missions with local government agencies in the immediate aftermath of the flooding. The organization is also using its community ties to distribute food parcels, school uniforms, and school supplies to families and rebuild critical infrastructure in the region.
  • SPARK/The Umkhumbane Schools Project quickly assembled their team to rebuild damaged schools and provide resources to families impacted by the disaster. This included disbursing school supplies, grocery vouchers, and other essentials. The organization collaborated with its community by surveying approximately 75 families who were affected by the flooding. This community outreach is helping the Umkhumbane Schools Project identify what community members need to rebuild and recover. Most recently, this included helping a child access vital medical treatment after she sustained an injury in the floods.

This fund is no longer accepting donations, and this will be the last fund report of this kind from our team. Thank you again for advancing community-led disaster recovery.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
