SOS Earthquake Solidarity Morocco

This report put the light on the actions undertaken by the Foundation Orient-Occident (FOO) in the region of Al Haouz in Morocco, following the earthquake that hit the region. Thanks to the support of donors like GlobalGiving, the FOO was abble to give a humanitarian aid and a crucial support to the affected communities.

Needs assessment and immediate response

Rigorous assessments realised by FOO’s teams in the field permited to identify the most urgent needs for the affected villages. Facing the emergency of the situation, the FOO has oriented its work on the most isolated villages and the most severly hit.

Actions of the Foundation Orient-Occident

Scolar kits distribution 

More than 220 scolar kits have been distributed among 8 villages, offering students essential school supplies for their studies.

Artistic caravan

An artistic caravan took place every months, benefiting to children from 4 different villages with games, theatre and manual activities.

Artistic workshop

Various artistic workshops, including painting, handicraft and story-telling, were organised to entertain and educate the children affected by the earthquake.

Menstrual hygiene workshop

Workshops were organised in order to raise awarness on menstruations and hygiene among the girls of the rural area. Underwear sets and educativ guides were also distributed.

Workshop on preventions against sexual exploitation 

Workshops were organised to educate children and social workers on the dangers of sexual exploitation. Books and pens were also distributed to promote women’s literacy.

A day for the environement in Tinmel 

A day was dedicated to educate children on the
protection of the environement trough drawing, painting and cleaning. 

School tutoring 

Students having followed school tutoring classes have shown significative improvements in their studies, with a success rate reaching 80%.

The provided support permitted to respond to the essential needs of children and families, to promote the education and awarness, and to offer a glimpse of hope in these difficult times.

We are delighted to share the remarkable impact your generous support has had on the lives of those affected by the recent earthquake in Morocco. Through our SOS Earthquake Relief Project, the Foundation Orient Occident (FOO) has been steadfast in its commitment to bringing hope, healing, and restoration to the resilient community in the village of Tinmel.

Assessment and Urgent Intervention

Following comprehensive on-the-ground assessments by our dedicated teams of psychologists and social workers, we identified the critical needs of the population in the villages surrounding Tahannaout, particularly Douar Tinmel and Douar Azrou. Given the urgency and the village's previous lack of humanitarian aid due to its remote location, we focused our efforts on Tinmel, a village completely devastated by the earthquake.

Immediate Relief Measures

Tinmel, housing around a hundred children, faced dire conditions with limited access to sanitation facilities, makeshift sleeping arrangements, and a lack of basic necessities. Our initial response prioritized:

• Distribution of Warm Clothing and School Kits: Providing essential items for the residents, especially the children.
• Container Facilities: Setting up and furnishing two containers for educational activities and an additional container for sanitation needs.
• Educational and Psychosocial Support: Conducting extracurricular activities, tutoring sessions, psychological counseling, and artistic and cultural workshops in the newly established containers.
• Menstrual Hygiene Education for Girls: Our teams prepared booklets explaining menstruation to young girls, conducting workshops to provide comprehensive understanding, and distributing menstrual panties to ensure their well-being.

Empowering Women’s Cooperatives

Beyond immediate relief, we are committed to supporting women's cooperatives whose livelihoods were disrupted. Many cooperatives, engaged in various artisanal activities, faced challenges due to the earthquake's aftermath. Our actions include:

• Needs Assessment: Identifying requirements for space and materials.
• Material Procurement: Acquiring necessary equipment and raw materials.
• Startup Assistance: Covering the initial transportation costs for the first merchandise.
• Marketing Guidance: Offering insights into digital marketing strategies to enhance product visibility, especially in the Marrakech region.
