Morocco has been hit hard by a violent earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8, leaving 2946 people dead and 5674 injured. Isolated communities in the High Atlas have been hard hit. The Fondation Orient Occident in coordination with the local authorities and associations, is working to deploy its intervention plan to help the population affected by the earthquake. Our priority is to meet the urgent and long-term needs for hit population in rural areas who receive no intervention.
According to the Ministry of Education, 530 schools were damaged. Thousands of uninsured people have lost their homes and are without a roof over their heads. With cold weather arriving quickly in mountainous regions, it is vital to find suitable short- and medium-term solutions to house and protect people while they rebuild. In addition, it is important to provide medium-term economic assistance and to rapidly give access to education to avoid a resurgence of child labor in rural areas.
All donations to this project will support Morocco's earthquake relief and recovery efforts in rural areas. Initially, the fund will meet families' immediate and psychosocial needs, shelter and then it will focus on reconstruction efforts in the affected areas, around our programs, to restore damaged homes, rebuild infrastructure, and much more, as needs evolve. Mobile home and schools in containers will also be set up to restore access to education as quickly as possible.
Through this community development program, the fund will protect the population, provide psychological support of at least 500 families, rebuild housing, provide stable infrastructure for schools and public buildings, and support efforts to re-establish cultural tourism programs, economic development, enabling people in the affected villages to move forward and make rural areas stronger for their future. Restoring access to education will reduce the risk of exploitation for at least 200 kids.
