First time together - Primera vez juntos
First time together - Primera vez juntos

Well, well, dear friends of SOLE Colombia… here again telling the progress and looking forward to what is to come! As we told you in our previous post, we are shooting mainly on two wonderful projects and we are already looking forward to telling you the news.

We still have a hangover from our meetings with the communities of Hilando Vidas y Esperanza Program, a program for reducing the digital divide in three main lines: mental health, strengthening the social fabric, and economic empowerment. It is supported by the North American Cooperation Agency (USAID) and implemented by the World Organization for Migration (OIM).

We traveled to 15 communities located in three main regions: Montes de María, Antioquia, Cauca and Valle…. We immerse ourselves in the exciting natural exuberance of Colombia, with its unlikely landscapes, its distances measured in time, its impossible paths, its majestic and sacred places. The charisma of its people, their desire to excel, the courage with which they face their daily lives, the commitment to their communities... the sparkle in their eyes when they receive the news that we did not get to teach them anything, that they are who will decide to be able to learn with their own tools and initiative what interests them the most... what power to ignite the flame does SOLE have.

As you know, SOLE needs few things: a space, four or five people per computer, internet connection and Big Questions. Many times, when we tell what is done in SOLE, they look at us incredulously, learning through Big Questions seems like a language from another planet… What are those Big Questions? How can you learn chemistry, physics, natural sciences, music, citizenship education and all the subjects that we all need to know, from Big Questions? How is the digital divide reduced in areas such as mental health, strengthening the social fabric, and economic empowerment?

Do you want examples? We share with you the questions that the communities of this project have worked on: what does boiling water do that hardens an egg and softens a potato? How does the water get into the coconut? why the envy? how does the moon affect nature? how was music born? how did the first human being who read know that he was reading? How did democracy come about? why are there so many languages? Why is there jealousy in the couple? How can we better develop our intelligence?

… isn't it wonderful?

We trained more than 50 people in the SOLE methodology, where people self-organize and use technology to learn to learn together, dialogue and take action. These people are already doing SOLE in their communities, in groups of 20-25 people, they are learning what interests them, what they need, what they propose themselves. The SOLE Ambassadors report their activity in several WhatsApp groups where we maintain a relationship with them, we find out how they are doing SOLE, but we also support them in important moments (some intense ones, such as the rainy season that has caused closures and emergencies, or the social and economic situation that currently destabilizes some of the territories, or the lack of connectivity that has caused delays and difficulties at all levels.

Two virtual Ambassador Cocktails have taken place in these months. We have witnessed the overwhelming enthusiasm that spreads among the Ambassadors, discovering that the messages are optimistic and committed and realizing the overwhelming force of empowering people to get where they want, as well as the great satisfaction that accompanying them on that path gives. .

In addition, connecting with our "SOLE Lab: La biblioteca del futuro" project (sponsored by the Internet Society Foundation as part of its BOLT call), we take advantage of these visits to take, first-hand, the information on connectivity that these libraries have. areas we visit. We want to build a Self-diagnosis Tool and a Solutions Guide for Connectivity with the intention that anyone, anywhere in Colombia (and the world), can assess the state of their connectivity, the causes that may be causing the difficulties to use the internet and how to solve them depending on the characteristics of your specific case…. what will that tool look like? Well, that is what we have begun to design, together with two wonderful and extremely talented organizations: Diversa and AtendidoPorSusPropietarios, who are already in the investigative phase, analyzing the data from the interviews carried out in these months and thoroughly describing the investigative evidence of existing solutions. in the planet.

In parallel, from SOLE Colombia we lead the construction process of the SOLE Lab, coordinating the work between the different trades and agents involved in the construction, in charge of Guaduatech and in collaboration with the community itself, the development of the basic protocols of use that the community space will have, the resources that it will involve from the community and the creation spaces that exist now to think of this place as an oasis of learning.

In addition, your help allows us to participate in exciting events where we echo the work we do and the great steps we are taking this year:

  • Global SoL, in Stockholm, where at the end of May we will lead several panels, we will do SOLE and we will show why supporting SOLE Colombia is a way to make this world a better place.
  • Build Peace, in Germany, where in November we will lead a Great Conversation in the city of Chemnitz related to some especially controversial issues that have polarized the opinion of the people who live there.
  • We participated with a presentation in the Master's Degree in Development Management and Practice, at the Universidad de Los Andes de Bogotá, where in April we told the participants how we are influencing the communities of the Colombian Pacific and how they, as leaders, can promote development of their communities and enterprises through the SOLE methodology.
  • With our great sponsor SAP, we made TechLoCuento podcast where we talked about the School of the Futur, we are also about to participate with an interview on SAP Now, taking the opportunity to celebrate the organization's birthday.
  • For the Education for a Living System event, in April, we prepared a presentation in which we show how learning differently is changing the lives of people in Colombia
  • We participated in the Feedback Summit, from FeedbackLabs, where in March we proposed our Great Conversations format to thinkers, professionals, funders and researchers to turn the information received from organizations into aid, philanthropy, non-profit organizations and the government that people need to live better.

We already announced that this year is being very intense and wonderful! And, best of all, each one of you is part of this adventure! None of this would be possible without you.

Thank you very much for continuing to support us!

2021 was a year marked by reflection. Our 2021 Great Conversation on the future of education yielded great ideas and opened our eyes to fundamental issues on which to continue talking, researching, dialoguing and creating… pure SOLE essence!

At the end of the year, and with the excuse of raising funds that allow us to continue sharing the SOLE methodology with people from every corner of Colombia, we join the #GivingTuesday initiative and your response to our call was COMPLETELY OVERWHELMING!

The theme of our campaign was to delve into one of the big ideas of our Big Conversation: Changing evaluation is changing the system.

How can we rethink what it means to evaluate the things that our children and young people need to deal with the problems and situations of a world that is constantly changing, with challenges that our generation cannot even imagine?…. You know that the professions in which our young people will work in the future have not even been invented, so how can we encourage them to create their own future? How to support them to invent those areas and knowledge that they will need?

We can no longer believe that we have absolute truths and that we know the answers. We cannot continue to believe that we know how to evaluate what works and what does not. We have to rethink our own position before knowledge.

Our Stubborn Founder launched the reflection on evaluation in this article, EVERYTHING IS BASED ON EVALUATION, IF YOU CHANGE THAT, YOU CHANGE EVERYTHING. We also invite personalities related to the world of education in Colombia to do so in a very enriching webinar: How do we know that we are learning? Building the new evaluation. Brigitte Baptiste, biologist and rector of the EAN University, Santiago Rivas, Colombian plastic artist and television presenter dedicated to art and culture, and María Bayter, doctoral student in education and one of our SOLE Community Stars.

Almost at the same time, Sugata Mitra and Suneeta Kulkarni, our mentors and creators of the SOLE Methodology, interviewed us in this incredible “Trading Places: Sugata Mitra & Suneeta Kulkarni interview SOLE Colombia” where we talked about how SOLE Colombia works by dismantling paradigms, stimulating self- organization as a basis for reinventing the classroom and the way we learn, dialogue and create thriving communities, together, using technology. It was incredible to be interviewed by two of our favorite people, reinforcing our admiration and affection for them.

We managed to get Colombian public television to support the broadcast of both events!! It is getting closer to reaching the farthest corners of the country and touching the consciences of those who have in their hands to start making big changes: families, teachers and students of all levels and communities in Colombia.

What else happened? Well, we completely rethought our strategy in the digital world, setting up a loudspeaker and interacting with all those people who dive looking for treasure-initiatives on the internet, so that they find in SOLE Colombia an ally with whom to develop new projects.

And, of course, with all the support we receive from you, we are already warming up for our field trips that WILL take place throughout this 2022 and that will be our starting signal for a year full of SOLE: chosen communities, we are ready to travel this month to our first destination!

None of this could have been possible without your support! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for continuing this work and for letting us know that, from your places scattered around the planet, you support our journey and the enthusiasm with which we invent new ways of doing SOLE every day.

Thank you for being part of the change and the construction of a better world!

Working for peace doesn't just mean taking action to end a war. It means setting the intention, unlearning the way in which we have built ourselves as a society and taking steps to overcome differences.

How do we do that? We need to propose new ways of talking, building and learning together… You know, it is what in SOLE Colombia we like to do and we do better.

It seems logical that, if we want our girls and boys to live in a different world, built from peace, we must transform the way they learn and the common places that, from childhood, influence our practices and values as a society.

Let us think that, if the issue of education is basic to build peace, then the school, as one of the pillars of education, should be rethought.

The pandemic also revealed that school needs big changes. Only people and social structures that were truly committed to their educational work managed to develop, and maintain over time, strategies to respond, in record time, to the needs of girls, boys and young people. They too made a titanic effort to continue learning. Many others have not had that luck and have suffered the consequences: they have abandoned their formal learning path and have been abandoned by the system, to their own luck, in areas where, if they seemed remote before, now they seem other planets ...

The health issue does not seem to have ended and, clearly, we have to adapt to a new way of living.

This is how we started our Great Conversation 2021: "If the pandemic changed everything, what should school be like during and after the pandemic?"

We wanted to hear from the main actors: students, parents, teachers, educational boards and organizations. We think that, in the first instance, these groups are the ones that have preference to express what the school should be like, now that we need to focus on caring for our communities and rethinking what aspects we have to influence to achieve these structural changes. It is useless to continue clinging to old ways, when the pandemic has shown us that we need to do it differently, and, in addition, it has also shown us that we can achieve it in record time, if we move with intention.

From those conversations we drew some beautiful conclusions, some of which we could intuit. Others definitely surprised us.

Do you want to know more? I share with you the beautiful infographic that we have prepared with the results of our conversation: FUTURE. EDUCATION. CHANGE. WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

Keep in touch!

Thanks for being part of the change

CAMBIO. ¿DE QUÉ CONVERSAMOS?

¡Seguimos en contacto!

Gracias por hacer parte del cambio

Talking about the future of education
Talking about the future of education

Dear SOLE Colombia friends,

We’re happy to share with you the latest news from SOLE Colombia.

Like you probably already heard, last year we were part of the great conversation about the future we want to create during the 75th UN Anniversary. More than 2000 people all around Colombia came together in different groups to talk around their own big questions. We had more than 100 conversations around diverse themes taking place in many different regions in the country.

From the beginning we didn't want this great conversation to be a one time event, we wanted to grow a network of diverse people and continue the conversation that would motivate us and all people connected, to take action and work together towards that future we are imagining. One of the main themes was education, and this is why in 2021 we continue talking around the Big Question motivated by PhD Sugata Mitra (creator of SOLE) and PhD Suneeta Kulkarni (Granny Cloud Director): What should the new school look like during and after the pandemic? You can watch the short video below to learn more about it.

The pandemic and the actual situation in Colombia has motivated us to think more deeply about learning and education. Teachers are thinking about different ways to keep the connection with their students, children are asking about what makes sense for them and are needing to connect with their peers, parents are in many cases overwhelmed because of the many tasks they have to achieve day by day. Also in Colombia many children are being left behind due to the lack of connectivity and the worst of all, some are being recruited by armed groups. This makes us think about the importance of education in our country and altogether for the planet we want to live in and leave to our children.

We already talked with teachers, students and soon we’ll be inviting parents and different people from organizations to join us in this conversation. We would love you to be also part of this great conversation about the future of education. If you would like to join, click here to register and we’ll send you more information.

One thing is clear for the majority, education has to change! We’re convinced that the first step towards that change is to talk about it. Join us and help us to spread the word.

Together we are changing the world!

Stay tuned for more SOLE Colombia update soon.

Join our beautiful network!

Dear SOLE friends,

We are thankful for all your support. Thanks to your contibutions we were able to continue our work last year and take what we do to another level. Even if it was a hard year for the whole planet, we had an awesome chance to develope together with our community and allies new strategies to come together and talk about the future we want.

All your donations in 2019 and 2020 were a great help, and that's why we could keep on working and better think how to connect with new allies. This is how we started a project with the UN in Colombia, UN75+SOLE. Last year within the 75th. Anniversary of the United Nations, we joined this worldwide initiative to talk about the common fufure we want for our planet and our shared humanity.

We made a call to our community to invite different people from their local communities to talk about the big questions about the future. This is how more than 2500 diverse people all over Colombia participated in more than 100 SOLE conversations (virtually with the support of, in person in some rural areas and using for assynchronous conversations that were part of the Greatest Conversations about the Fufute we want

Here you can see (and play a little with the information) about this great conversation: And here you can listen and see the voices of different people who participated (and you can also upload your own post if you like :)):

For now, the UN project has finished, but we don't want to stop here, there's still a lot we can do together together to take action and take what we started last year to the next level, and contribute in this way to give long-lasting peace to Colombia. We don't want to do this alone, we believe we can go much further if we go together. The community we already had before UN75 was great, and this community is becoming awesome with so many new people joining in and contributing with theit time, ressources and big ideas.

All of you who have donated are also part of this network, and this is why we're inviting you to stay here and keep on supporting us with your donations, time, ideas and sharing this information with your different networks. We believe in the power of connecting diverse people from different backrounds and inviting you all to think and dream, and work together towards the future we want. We also believe that each group of people can learn and develope together different ways to solve their own challenges, but is more powerfull if we have the chance to share it with others and feel connected.

Between different project we would like to explore, we have identified two main challenges for this year.

First, find better and more creative solutions for the Education for children and youth in the middle of the pandemic. Children and youth have suffered more than many the consequences of not going to school and meeting their friends. How can we together find better alternatives? Education was also one of the main themes that came out last year in different conversations, this is why we want to continue working and exploring together different ways and solutions.

In Colombia (and many parts of the world) we have another problem, that becomes a new challenge: More than 50% of the population doesn't have Internet connection, this makes it very difficult for many to learn and keep connected to the world. How can we find alternatives to connect those communities in remote or marginalized areas and regions that don't have connectivity?

At SOLE Colombia, together with our community, we would love to explore new ways of adressing this challenges. For this we need an awesome network as we are already building, but we also need more ressources to keep on working as a team. We would be very happy if you could join us this 2021 journey, are you in?

We'll send you updated news from our different projects within How to give long-lasting peace to Colombia?. If you have any questions, please write to, we'll be very happy to stay in touch with you.

Thanks again for all your support!
