Skills Acquisition for 100 women in the community

The past months focused on community entry, stakeholder engagement, and the finalization of the beneficiary selection framework. We have successfully secured the buy-in of traditional leadership in Nembe and established the Project Steering Committee (PSC).

* Stakeholder Engagement: Held town hall meetings with the Nembe Traditional Council and women’s group leaders.
* Trade Identification: Finalized the five vocational pillars based on market demand in the Niger Delta:
* Sustainable Aqua-processing (Advanced fish drying and packaging).
* Fashion Design & Garment Production.
* Sustainable Agribusiness (Snail farming and vegetable gardening).
* Catering & Confectionery.
* Digital Literacy & Micro-business Management.
* Beneficiary Mapping: Received over 1,200 recommendations from community groups; the vetting process for the final 1,000 disadvantaged women is 40% complete.

3. Challenges & Mitigations
* Logistics (Riverine Terrain): Transporting equipment to remote parts of Nembe remains expensive.
* Mitigation: We are clustering training centers in central accessible hubs to reduce individual travel for participants.
* High Demand: Interest has exceeded the 1,000-person capacity.
* Mitigation: Implementing a strict "vulnerability criteria" (prioritizing widows and female heads of household) to ensure the most disadvantaged are served first.

* Expenditure to Date: Used primarily for community town halls, venue deposits, and staff mobilization.

Introduction of project

Nembe Local Government Area in Bayelsa State is a prominent riverine community within the Niger Delta, characterized by strong traditional livelihoods (fishing, farming, trading) and abundant natural resources. However, pervasive issues such as oil spill pollution, limited access to formal employment, and high poverty rates among women necessitate targeted economic interventions. The women of Nembe play a pivotal role in household survival, making their economic empowerment a direct path to community resilience.

The project goal is to enhance the economic status and support sustainable entrepreneurship among 1,000 women in the Nembe community by providing market-relevant vocational and life skills, coupled with essential start-up resources, if available.

Key Objectives

1. To train 1,000 women in five identified vocational trades within 12 months.
2. To equip at least 80% of graduates with comprehensive starter-packs to launch micro-businesses.
3. To improve the average monthly income of participating households by 25% six months after graduation.

The primary beneficiaries ware 1,000 disadvantaged women, including young mothers, widows, and female heads of household, selected through recommendations from community groups.
