Everyone has dreams, and this is especially the case for the underprivileged girls to whom we grant scholarships each year in Niamey, Niger. Part of their dreams became a reality thanks to your generous donations over the years which empowered them to gain autonomy as a woman and allowed them to pursue their education from 6th grade through high school and escape early marriages.
Your donations have given them the opportunity to have a quality education at Hampaté Bâ Middle School and High School, which was the most wonderful gift they could ever dream of.
Not only that, but we have also been able to provide them with regular meals at the lunchtime break and with after school tutoring by trained tutors to give them confidence in themselves and to increase their ability to maintain good grades.
All these factors have played towards making some of these girls stand out after the Baccalaureat as real success stories. Each one had a dream 10 years ago and has worked hard to realise her dream and show that dreams can become reality. This transition from dream to reality is even more amazing to observe when we see the poor backgrounds they have come from and obstacles they had to courageously overcome.
Here are some concrete examples of a few of the Hampaté Bâ School graduates that you have been supporting :
2019 Hampaté Bâ graduate - MEET KARIMA
GYNECOLOGY
Karima has dreamt of becoming a gynecologist and deliver babies since she was 10 years old. She comes from an extremely poor background, but her father has agreed that he will follow his daughter in her dream (with our financial support, of course). Karima has decreed that as long as the blood flows in her veins, she will continue her efforts to follow her medical studies, no matter how difficult they are and become a gynecologist one day. When she took the entrance exam to be admitted to one of the best Medical Schools in Niamey, she was Number 1. Since then, she has always been top of her class. Last Spring she was sent to an internship in Maradi, a city 10 hours away from Niamey and delivered babies and comforted new mothers over 2 months. Karima remains enthusiastic about her career. In spite of the many challenges and long hours of studies. She is still passionate about what she is doing and declares that dreams become reality when we put our minds to it. She courageously marches on!!
2022 Hampaté Bâ graduate - MEET MARIAMA
INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Mariama just graduated from Hampaté Bâ High School in July this summer. She succeeded the Baccalaureate with high honours which normally would have qualified her for a State scholarship. Unfortunately, Mariama is not Nigerien, but is from Togo, and therefore she could not take advantage of a scholarship from the Nigerien government in spite of her excellent Bac results. Mariama as a young girl always had the same dream. She never stopped dreaming of becoming a lawyer and defending human rights and humanitarian causes. She was determined to follow this dream no matter what. With determination she found a private university with a law department specialising in humanitarian law and which proposed an exam for candidates from other African countries with the possibility of a scholarship if test results were excellent !
And they were !! Mariama was asked to cite a proverb from Togo and write a short essay on its meaning. Mariama chose a significative Togo proverb :” A tree that is alone, will fall with the wind.” This proverb goes along hand in hand with Mariama’s humanitarian studies as her career will be based on defending human rights and those who are alone and need solidarity of others to survive. She will be defending those causes and helping those in need.
Karima and Mariama are only two examples of scholarship girls whose dreams had the power to create the reality they were dreaming about. There are many more and you will see some of their photos here below. These girls all had the courage to believe in the power of dreams. They let themselves dream and allowed themselves to be ambitious; they were able to transform their dream into a resolution of hard work and passion BEFORE thinking of all the difficulties involved. They made their choice and then developed their dream. They were able to turn their dreams into reality thanks to you and your generous donations. Please continue your support which we appreciate so much.
Be the change ! It is vital that more underprivileged girls have the opportunity through education to evolve, become autonomous, learn to fight for their rights and break the poverty cycle.
We need your continued support for this to happen. Thank you!
