Empowering Dreams: How Your Support is Changing the Lives of Underprivileged Girls in Niger

At “Les Amis de Hampaté Bâ,” we are committed to transforming the lives of young girls from impoverished backgrounds in Niger by providing them with the education and opportunities they need to break free from the cycle of poverty. For many of these girls, the challenges they face are immense. With parents who are often illiterate and unable to support their education, these young women start their academic journeys with significant disadvantages. But with your generous support, we are helping them overcome these hurdles, giving them a chance to pursue their passions, contribute to the world, and inspire humanity for years to come.

While many of our scholarship girls thrive, some struggle to keep up with the demands of their education. Yet, even in the face of failure and setbacks, these girls refuse to give up. With the additional support of private tutoring, nutritious meals, and constant encouragement, they have found the strength, ambition, and determination to turn their failures into success. Today, we want to share the inspiring stories of a few of these young women who have proven that when there is a will, there is always a way.

Fadimata: A Journey from Disappointment to Determination

Fadimata’s story is one of resilience and unwavering determination. As a young orphan living with her older brother, who is himself uneducated and struggling financially, Fadimata’s future seemed bleak. Despite these challenges, our charity supported her through four years of middle school. However, her journey was far from smooth. After failing her exams, she was unable to continue on to high school—a devastating setback. Undeterred, Fadimata repeated her final year of middle school, but once again, her exam results fell short of the mark needed for high school admission.

Many might have given up, but not Fadimata. Instead of seeing this as the end, she chose to follow her passion for healthcare. She enrolled in a Health Institute, where she knew no one and had to start from scratch. Her hard work and dedication paid off when she earned her National Health Assistant Diploma. Now, she is continuing her studies at a renowned Health Institute with the goal of becoming a certified nurse. Fadimata has already completed her first year with flying colors and dreams of one day managing her own health institute, helping other girls achieve their dreams as well.

Nafissa: Turning Setbacks into New Beginnings

Nafissa’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence. Initially, she aspired to become a midwife, but her struggles with scientific subjects made her question this path. She decided to switch to business school, but even there, she found little passion and nearly dropped out. After three challenging years, Nafissa completed her studies but failed to validate her Bachelor’s Degree, leaving her unsure of her next steps.

Despite her doubts, Nafissa did not give up. Determined to find a career that would allow her to make a difference, she decided to pursue a position in the police force. However, she needed a business school diploma to secure a higher-level salary. With renewed motivation, Nafissa returned to business school and succeeded in obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree. Today, she is happily working as a paid intern in the police force, with the promise of full-time employment after one year. Nafissa’s journey from uncertainty to success highlights the importance of perseverance and the incredible potential that lies within each of these young women.

Zalika: From Struggle to Success

When Zalika first entered high school, she was a very weak student, barely managing to pass her classes. Despite earning her Baccalaureate, her early years in business school were marked by poor grades in almost every subject. It was clear that Zalika needed additional support to reach her full potential.

Thanks to your donations, we were able to provide Zalika with private tutoring, which made all the difference. With the extra help, she began to improve drastically, turning her academic record around. Not only did she successfully earn her Bachelor’s Degree, but she also completed a BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur) degree and was selected for prestigious internships in Human Resources. This October, Zalika will begin her first year of a Master’s Degree program, a testament to how far she has come from those early struggles.

Nassyatou: Defying the Odds

Nassyatou’s story is one of extraordinary determination. She was the weakest student in her entire middle school class, and by all conventional wisdom, she was destined to fail. But Nassyatou had a dream: to pursue a career in health sciences, despite her low academic level and challenging background. Her mother, an illiterate woman who sells water to make a living, was unable to offer any educational support.

Recognizing her potential, our charity financed summer classes in biology for Nassyatou. Incredibly, she not only passed her exams but was accepted into a top health school. After just one year, Nassyatou is now among the top 10 students in her class. This September, she will begin her second year of studies, determined to continue defying the odds and achieving her dreams.

Ramatou: Overcoming Health Challenges to Succeed

Ramatou’s journey has been marked by numerous challenges, including health problems like asthma, which severely impacted her ability to perform in school. After failing to obtain her high school diploma, Ramatou decided to pursue a career in nursing. However, she failed the entrance exam to the health school and had to settle for business school at a lower level.

Despite these setbacks, Ramatou did not lose hope. She persevered and after three years, earned her Professional High School Degree. Remarkably, she was the only student to also obtain her BTS degree a year early, without any additional coaching. Now, Ramatou is in her first year of upper studies, working towards a Bachelor’s Degree that she aims to complete in the next two years. Her resilience in the face of adversity is a powerful reminder of the strength and determination these young women possess.

They help our charity to not only finance these girls' education, but especially to provide them access to crucially needed private tutoring, coaching, and food . As a result, these young girls are not only overcoming their challenges but are also paving the way for a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities. They are proving that, with the right support, anything is possible.
