It’s« Back to School » time for students in Niamey, but a little later than usual this year.
Due to the Pandemic of Covid 19, classes were interrupted for 2 months last year until June when the program resumed for 45 days. Consequently, the diploma exams were delayed by a few months and the results were published only end August/beginning September. Therefore, the month of September was very busy registering students not only at Hampaté Bâ Secondary school, but for those with new diplomas, (BEPC Brevet and BAC diploma). Registration and entrance exams took place in institutes specializing in each student’s area of interest. All on board for October 15th ! The girls are all very happy and excited for the new school year in front of them, which is full of hope and opportunities to explore new subjects leading towards bright beginnings and a better future.
One of the best presents a Nigerien girl could receive is a quality education and books ! They bring immediately a smile to the faces of our underprivileged girls who have received scholarships from our Association to pay for school fees, thanks to your generosity. There is nothing that can make them more jubilant than to learn that their scholarship has been accepted and renewed. They will have the honor of attending school and learning new things much to their delight, and consequently escape early marriages and the plight of remaining at home to do housework. Girls in Niger are becoming more and more ambitious and eager to be autonomous. Times are changing.
We have given the girls the bonus of various books this year to help them along and guide them in their studies. This surprise had the same effect as if we had offered them diamonds and gold ! They were ecstatic ! And they grabbed their new textbooks with glee !
Zoom on New Diploma Recipients :
BEPC BREVET DIPLOMA RESULTS : 100 %
This year we are so proud to announce that our girl students had 100% success for the BEPC Brevet Exam 2020. This was a first ! (The national average was 50%, so our girls did very well). Most of these girls who graduated from 9th grade (3ème) decided to follow professional studies so as to get jobs sooner and be able to help support their parents who are very poor and most of whom are illiterate. This interesting opportunity is open to them with a BEPC certificate. Some have chosen to follow health studies in a specialized institute and others have chosen to follow computer management and accounting courses leading to a professional Bac after 3 years.
BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA RESULTS : 54 %
This year we are delighted that 7 out of 13 students presenting the Bac, actually succeeded. This is totally amazing, considering the underprivileged backgrounds the girls come from. Indeed, the national average is 35 % and we scored 54%. One of these girls is passing an entrance exam for a renowned Medical School, another is joining a university to do law studies to become a judge, and the others are entering a well known business school to specialize in accounting, management and human ressources. These are no longer just dreams, but are becoming realities. They are all wonderful opportunities and our girls are rising to unexpected levels. Your faithful donations have made this all possible. We are happy to see that through education we are contributing not only to each girl’s individual progress, but also collectively contributing to fight against obscurantism.
IN BETWEEN CLASSES AT HAMPATE BA : 100 % MOVE TO NEXT LEVEL
In Hampate Ba Middle School and High School, all our girl students moved successfully to the next level. Most of them are among the best students in their grade. The bonus of books was a way to congratulate them for their perserverance and they are very proud and very grateful.
RE-DOING THE SENIOR YEAR FOR THE FEW WHO DID NOT GET THE BAC
This year we were sorry that 6 out of 13 students presenting the Bac, did NOT succeed, but were very close to getting the diploma. They worked very hard all year, in spite of the challenges of Covid 19, terrible dust storms, high temperatures, floods, and classes that were missed. Due to all these circumstances, we decided they deserved to have a second chance to re-enforce their capacities by re-doing the senior year.
We need you ! Times are tough for everyone, but in order to give these 6 girls a second chance to get their Bac diploma, we need to finance a supplementary year for them. Some of these girls are orphans and many of the others have parents who are unable to finance schooling for their daughters. These girls won’t be able to have access to a scholarship for the last year of High School without our help, since their families can’t afford secondary education for them. Your faithful donations have helped us in the past and can continue to do so.
Your continued support is needed and appreciated.
We can encourage the girls and give them enthusiastic support for one more year of a scholarship at Hampate Ba High School with your aid. Remember ! Niger is one of, if not the poorest country in the world and only 9% of girls attend middle school and just 3% go on to high school. In Niger, approximately 65% of girls are married before the age of 18 and 1/3 before the age of 15. However, regarding girls who have a secondary education, only 18% marry before the age of 18.
Your gift of secondary school education to young underprivileged girls will have long-standing effects on the girl, her family, and her community, We look forward to keeping you updated about the many ways your support is changing young girls’ lives in Niger. Thank you for your generosity and continued support. All amounts are welcome. Every donation counts !
