Summary

We work in remote Western Uganda, with high maternal death rates. When a mother dies in childbirth the family cannot replace mother's milk, the baby will also die without help. Formula milk is generally unavailable, so bottle feeding is not widespread. NOTDEC can train a family member to care for the baby, or we care for the baby at our centre. We provide milk until the child is 12 months old, at a cost of 1,500 US$. At any one-time NOTDEC can be supporting up to 16 babies in this way.

Challenge

The problem is maternal mortality, in a relatively poor remote area of SW Uganda. Maternal mortality in this region is typically twice the national average for Uganda. Key Factors Contributing to Maternal Mortality in the Region are: Referral Delays Direct obstetric causes, severe bleeding (hemorrhage), infections (sepsis), and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (like preeclampsia/eclampsia) are the primary causes of death. Lack of Antenatal Care Socioeconomic Factors Health System Challenges

Solution

NOTDEC Uganda works in conjunction with Government Services to provide care for babies where mothers have died. The Government agencies contact NOTDEC and every effort is made to care for the babies either in the community or in our purpose built centre. The provision of baby milk is crucial to sustain the baby for the first year, and supporting this programme will mean we are able to accept more babies than our current funding allows for. Further funding is needed for bottle feed training.

Long-Term Impact

The numbers of children within our programme are testimony of lives saved. We not only rescue babies, but care for them, and provide for their needs through school to independence. We have a current total of 164 Sponsored Children, and 6 children without sponsors There are 51 Children cared for on site 87 Primary & Nursery children 26 Secondary children 6 children receiving secondary training
