El Segundo’s 28th Annual Arbor Day, held on March 7th, 2015, was a celebration of both tree planting and care. During the event, Trees to the Sea, our green pollution barrier, received some much needed care by volunteers, both tall and small. Why is tree care important? Planting Trees is just the beginning! Trees sequester more CO2 as they age and the average lifespan of a city tree is 7-15 years depending on the species.
So, to give our tree friends a bit of help eight teams were assigned to various portions of a half-mile long section of the median on Imperial Highway and went to work. Each team was led by a trained Youth Planting Supervisor and the groups pulled invasive weeds, dead plants and picked up countless bags of trash.
So what’s next for Trees to the Sea? We are rounding up volunteers, funding and supplies to do a full maintenance check of the irrigation system that waters the entire length of our Trees to the Sea. As the drought situation continues in Southern California we look forward to having a less dry summer with the help of municipal water.
Check out the great work our volunteers were able to accomplish during Arbor Day in our event photo gallery!
