When we first met Jennifer’s family of 13 during a visit to monitor our agricultural project, we couldn’t ignore the dire state of their latrine. It was unsafe, unsanitary, and barely functional. This year, when we returned, the situation had worsened—the latrine had completely collapsed. With no alternative, Jennifer and her children had no choice but to practice open defecation in nearby bushes.
The heartbreak was real. A mother struggling to provide for her children now faced the added burden of a broken sanitation system, putting her family at risk of disease and stripping away their privacy and dignity. It became clear that this was more than a project; it was an urgent call to action.
When the opportunity came to intervene, our team rallied together for a groundbreaking launch. Volunteers joyfully joined hands in the construction process, delivering materials to Jennifer’s home and taking an active role in laying the foundation. Before starting, we paused for a heartfelt prayer, dedicating the project to God and seeking His blessing over the work and Jennifer’s family. Each moment was filled with hope, unity, and purpose. Now the latrine is at a roof level and will be complete in a few days time.
Thanks to a kind donation from Compasio Global Child Advocates, Jennifer’s family is now seeing hope rise. The new, safe, ventilated latrine we are building will not only restore their dignity but also ensure a healthier, safer future for the next decade.
Jennifer’s story is one of many. Hundreds of families in rural Gulu live in similar conditions, but with your support, we can change that. Together, let’s build more than latrines—let’s build hope, health, and dignity.
