For years, the women of rural Kenya have been the unsung heroes of their communities, facing the daunting task of collecting water for their families. Each day, they embark on long, exhausting journeys to the nearest river, making multiple trips under the scorching sun to fetch water for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. It’s hard to fathom, but according to the UN, women and girls spend a staggering 200 million hours every year just walking to get water. This reality shapes their lives in profound ways, affecting their health, education, and safety.
These brave women know the risks all too well—the long walks to the river, the constant fear of violence along the way, and the ever-present threat of waterborne diseases lurking in the contaminated water they bring home.
This is where the Tekelbei Foundation steps in. We were formed with a simple but powerful mission: to provide affordable, reliable, and sustainable solutions to water access challenges. Our first project aimed to alleviate this burden by supplying water tanks to families in need, enabling them to harvest and store rainwater. So far, we have been able to donate 400 tanks, benefiting 2,000 people. Hearing the heartfelt stories from women who now have access to clean water is what drives us. They tell us how having a tank at home has lifted the heavy load off their shoulders. No more grueling trips to the river—now, they can simply turn on the tap to access clean water for their daily needs.
The impact of our work is immediate and transformative. With more time and energy on their hands, these women can focus on other important aspects of their lives. Their children, especially daughters, no longer need to join them on those long walks. Instead, they can attend school regularly and chase their dreams. And with clean water available, there’s a newfound sense of safety and security in these communities. Women and girls no longer have to risk their safety when fetching water, and the threat of waterborne diseases is significantly reduced.
But our journey doesn’t stop here. We’re still seeking support to reach more families who need our help. We’re mobilizing resources and engaging with targeted communities, truly listening to their needs and working passionately to uplift those who are struggling.
This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to join us in this important mission. Your support can help us provide essential water tanks to families in rural Kenya, transforming lives and offering hope for a better future.
Let’s work together to secure the future of our women and girls. Your contribution, no matter how small, can unlock their potential and empower entire communities.
