The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to provide assistance to affected communities by ensuring access to safe drinking water. Here are a few highlights of our activities over the past few months:

Special containers were delivered to the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital to ensure safe storage of drinking water. This will help increase the hospital’s readiness for potential emergencies and maintain its stable operation.
Two medical facilities in the Cherkasy region received plastic containers for storing drinking water.
Volunteers from the Kherson Regional Branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross delivered drinking water to residents of the “Korabel” neighborhood in Kherson. Currently, about 500 people continue to live in their homes despite challenging conditions.
The Shyrokivska community received two modern water purification units from the Zaporizhzhia Regional Branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross.
In the village of Petro-Mykhailivka, Zaporizhzhia district, a modern mobile water purification unit has been put into operation. The unit has a capacity of up to 30 m³ per day, fully meeting the local population’s needs for safe drinking water.
The Zaporizhzhia Regional Branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross also delivered a mobile autonomous water purification unit, OAZIS S300, to the Polohy Vocational Lyceum. This modern unit is designed to remove mechanical, organic, and microbiological contaminants from freshwater, with a capacity of 250–300 liters per hour, providing clean drinking water for up to 1,000 people daily. With this equipment, the lyceum will be able to guarantee safe water for both students and staff.

Widespread infrastructure destruction caused by the war and the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam has significantly hindered access to drinking water for residents of the Zaporizhzhia region. To help communities overcome this crisis, in the summer 2025, the Ukrainian Red Cross together with partners implemented a humanitarian project to support water purification and supply systems. The total value of the initiative amounted to approximately 5 million UAH.

As a result, more than 25,000 people — including rural residents, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and children — gained access to safe drinking water.

As part of the project, the following were provided to communities in Zaporizhzhia region:

16 water purification units of varying capacity (from 5,000 to 18,000 liters per day) — to meet the population’s needs;
16 reverse osmosis systems — for water purification in educational institutions for children;
58 storage and transportation tanks (ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 liters in volume);
Sets of consumables (reagents, filters, carbon cartridges) — to ensure the stable operation of purification stations;
Tools and equipment for emergency response (welding machines, electric pumps, motor pumps, etc.).

The project made it possible to restore or improve water supply in over 20 settlements, including in the Petro-Mykhailivska, Kushuhumska, Dolynska, Vilnianska, and other communities. The aid was focused on the educational institutions, resilience centers (“Points of Invincibility”), communities with a large number of IDPs, and areas without centralized water supply.

The Ukrainian Red Cross continues working to ensure that as many communities in Ukraine as possible have consistent access to safe drinking water — even under emergency conditions.

n the Kyiv region, 59 villages have been provided with access to drinking water thanks to the Ukrainian Red Cross

Since 2024, the Ukrainian Red Cross has been successfully implementing a project to restore and provide equipment for critical public water infrastructure in the Kyiv region, which was damaged during the war.

The project is carried out in several stages. In the first stage, the Ukrainian Red Cross formed a WatHab team consisting of the National Committee and regional and city branches, which assessed the needs of communities for equipment and materials. Based on the compiled lists, financial assistance was provided to local public sector organisations in the Kyiv region, namely the municipal enterprises of the Ivankiv and Poliske Village Councils and the Vyshhorod City Council. The Ukrainian Red Cross purchased all the necessary tools and spare parts for the repairs. As a result, valves were installed on pipelines, and outdated pumping equipment was replaced with new, modern systems in all communities.

As of today, the Ukrainian Red Cross has purchased and delivered power tools, well pumps, motor pumps, control cabinets, frequency converters, fixtures, pipes, valves, taps, couplings, and other water supply equipment to communities, totalling almost UAH 7 million. The project has now reached 59 villages. As a result, access to water has significantly improved in three districts of the Kyiv region: Vyshhorod, Ivankiv, and Poliske. The regional and local branches of the organisation were actively involved in the project, which enhanced their competence and efficiency.

The second stage of the project began in January 2025. It focuses on providing support to the communities in the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro regions. A partial needs assessment of local communities has already been completed.
The Ukrainian Red Cross is working primarily with representatives of local authorities, municipal water utilities, and organisations responsible for water supply to ensure that project strategies align with the needs of the communities and that effective feedback is gathered to achieve successful results.

Our goal is to do everything we can to provide access to quality drinking water in the communities that need it most!
