Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine's water and sanitation sector has suffered losses of almost $4 billion. We focus on providing people with access to drinking water in the regions that suffered the most.
The war in Ukraine has caused much suffering. Damage to civilian infrastructure has impaired the population's access to basic necessities, including drinking water. The regions of Kharkiv, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk were hit the hardest. Up to 40% of freshwater reserves were lost due to the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, and an estimated 25% of drinking water supply networks were either destroyed or damaged. Approximately 1.5 million people remain in the most affected areas.
The Ukrainian Red Cross has been drilling wells and installing water pumps and filtration systems in the eastern regions to restore access to drinking water in the most severely affected areas.
By providing access to basic necessities in the affected areas, we aim to reduce the number of people forced to leave their homes due to inadequate living conditions. Moreover, the absence of clean drinking water fosters the proliferation of diseases and health issues.
