Dear GlobalGiving supporter,
The Pinabete tree, Abies guatemalensis is an endemic conifer from the upper montane forests of Central America. Since the 1960s, it has increasingly been harvested as a Christmas tree, which has resulted in the branches of adult trees and entire young trees being removed from the forest.
These activities are becoming increasingly unsustainable and the Pinabete is currently classified as Endangered in the IUCN Red List. This is why we are working with our local partner institutions in Guatemala to raise awareness about this issue and discourage people from illegal logging or purchasing Pianbete trees or branches during the holiday season. We recently put together this video with the Natural Resource Council of the 48 Cantones of Totonicapán to help us spread the word:

It is an ongoing battle. But, by planting trees, protecting standing forests, raising awareness about the problem, and working on enforcement when there are violations, we are making progress. Our local partner actively works with local authorities to confiscate illegally harvested trees from the communal forest. I've attached a few pictures for you.
I work with these communities day in and day out. I know how much they appreciate the positive impact you are making in their lives and on their forest through your support of EcoLogic. If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with me. Or, better yet, come visit us and see for yourself!
In solidarity,
Fernando Recancoj
