Following the 6.9M earthquake in northern Cebu on September 30, 2025, its aftershocks, and the subsequent Typhoon Kalmaegi in November, CDP Foundation supported communities in San Remigio in their recovery and in strengthening long-term resilience against complex and compounding hazards.
Through collaboration with international, national, and local partners, including community organizations, schools, and local government units, CDP Foundation mobilized additional support to implement a comprehensive and responsive intervention.
Key Interventions:
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS): CDP continued structured MHPSS sessions for community responders, teachers, and students. A Training of Trainers (ToT) was conducted to build local facilitation capacity, enabling ongoing psychosocial support and helping residents cope with the cumulative stress from multiple disasters.
Resilient Housing Construction: Training sessions were conducted for local masons, carpenters, contractors, and LGU representatives on earthquake- and typhoon-resilient construction techniques, safe building practices, and disaster-resilient standards. This streamlined reconstruction efforts and ensured that houses rebuilt after the earthquake and typhoon were safer and more resilient.
Support for Community-Led Initiatives: Communities were empowered with microgrants and technical guidance to implement solutions tailored to their needs and context. This approach strengthened local ownership, fostered collaboration, and reinforced proactive disaster preparedness and recovery.
Results:
Over 3,500 households received emergency support packages, including solar lights, tarpaulins, and water containers, aiding both immediate recovery and resilience during Typhoon Kalmaegi.
61 individuals participated in MHPSS sessions, including 16 trained as facilitators to continue services locally.
46 local construction practitioners demonstrated increased knowledge in resilient housing techniques, ensuring safer rebuilding.
Community-led initiatives strengthened local capacity to respond to future hazards and promote sustained recovery.
Conclusion:
While initial support from multiple partners enabled the delivery of critical interventions, continued support from GlobalGiving donors has been essential in sustaining these efforts. This support allows CDP Foundation and the communities to build on the gains of the intervention—ensuring continuity of MHPSS services, reinforcing resilient construction practices through policy development and advocacy, and expanding community-led initiatives—toward long-term recovery, resilience, and sustainability in the face of future complex hazards.
