Communities across the Philippines continue to demonstrate that resilience is strengthened through local leadership and collective action. During this reporting period, two community partners implemented initiatives that addressed essential needs following disaster events. In Cebu, the Purok Pading Farmers Association (PPFA) improved food security through a community-managed rice enterprise, while in Sarangani, the Davao del Norte Persons with Disability Association (DAVNOR PWD Association) led an emergency drinking water response for earthquake-affected communities.
Following the earthquake in northern Cebu, PPFA established a rice enterprise that enables members to collectively purchase affordable rice based on actual demand, reducing transportation costs and improving access to a staple food, particularly during disasters. Between April and May 2026, the association completed three procurement cycles, serving participating households while generating modest organizational income to sustain future activities. The initiative has strengthened cooperation among members and demonstrated how community-managed systems can improve both food security and organizational resilience.
Following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Southern Mindanao, the DAVNOR PWD Association coordinated the distribution of 2,000 bottles of 5-liter drinking water, reaching approximately 2,000 earthquake-affected persons, particularly persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, through partnerships with Nature's Spring Foundation, government agencies, and CDP's Anticipatory and Humanitarian Action (AHA!) Program. Building on this emergency response, DAVNOR is now developing a community-led early recovery proposal with mentoring support from CDP. Through this accompaniment process, the organization is refining its recovery priorities and project design, while CDP facilitates access to GlobalGiving support. Together, these initiatives demonstrate how investing in local organizations enables communities not only to respond to immediate needs but also to lead their own recovery and strengthen resilience to future hazards.
