Summary

Crime Check Foundation intends to release and reintegrate 200 poor petty offenders who have served part of their sentence to continue their education and personal growth. This has become necessary because the absence of a Community Sentencing Law in Ghana, and the inability of poor offenders to pay court fines, account for the imprisonment of pregnant women, the aged and the youth in deplorable prison conditions for petty crimes such as fighting, loitering, selling at unauthorized places etc.

Challenge

Poverty and the absence of a Community Sentencing Law in Ghana results in the jailing of Petty Offenders who are unable to pay the fines imposed on them by the courts. We have paid court fines, released, trained and reintegrated about a thousand Petty Offenders into society. However, the death of Ex-Ghana International and Chelsea and Newcastle football star, Christian Atsu who was our main donor has made it difficult to release and reintegrate many Petty Offenders into society

Solution

We pay the court fines for jailed petty offenders who have served part of their sentence, release them from prisons, and reintegrate them into society through counseling and livelihood support training programs such as provision of basic shelter, meals, painting, carpentry, masonry, driving, and start-up capital, based on the unique needs of the released offender. By acquiring these livelihood training and start-ups support, the ex-petty offenders become self-reliant, and do not re-offend.

Long-Term Impact

The project will release 200 poor petty offenders from prison and take them through counseling and critical life skills, helping them to reintegrate into society. The empowered young men and women make a living from their livelihood skills and support themselves, their family, and do not re-offend and get jailed again.
