TUSA Women and income-generating activities
TUSA Women and income-generating activities

In the course of these 3 months since the posting of the last report in February, Tushirikiane (TUSA)- Community-based Organization has gone on with all its activities and is still focusing on projects aimed at sustainability of its members through income-generating activities, the category of assistance under which this project "Raising refugees'living standards falls. This is the kind of projects aimed at making members self-reliant in the long run and helping them be able to be self-sufficient financially. In this regard, Tushirikiane is putting in place a mechanism of making members help one another through the establishment of self-help groups.

However, in this period, Tushirikiane did not fund any new project under this project, though it has under some other project funded some other donors.

As the donations stand by now, Tushirikiane has been able to raise 1596 USD, which was topped up with an amount of 190 USD driven by GlobalGiving and 29 USD received as additional grants and funds. The total received so far is 1815 USD, out of which 1324.54 has been disturbed and has been used to fund the 6 projects mentioned above, for with an amount of Ksh 145,000. We hope and believe the project will continue to grow and contribute to Tushirikiane's objective of making its members self-reliant through income-generating activities. We are also planning to put more effort by encouraging our former members, in particular those who resettled abroad, donate through this platform so that they can given back to the community.

Tushirikiane (TUSA)- Community-based Organization is still going on with all its activities and is now focusing on projects aimed at sustainability, the category of assistance under which this project "Raising refugees'living standards falls. This is the kind of projects aimed at making members self-reliant in the long run and helping them be able to be self-sufficient financially through income-generating activities.

It is in this context that it has given another three (3) women members loans to start income-generating projects under this project. The focus on women is driven by the belief that when women are financially stable and able, the whole family is as they are the ones who are mostly managing the daily welfare of the family. These women have expressed their interest and desire to engage in income-generating activities by selling the African cloth commonly called "vitenge" so that they can be able to take care of their families. Tushirikiane helped each of them with a loan of Ksh 10, 000 (about 90 USD), which they will pay in 10 installments for the funds to be given to another member.

As a reminder, these 3 women join the group of other three members whose projects were also funded under this project, which means that the number of members running businesses under this project is now 6. We hope it will keep on increasing as we will be receiving more funds since the project is still active on GlobalGiving Platform and receiving donations. The number will also increase as the funds already given out will be repaid and start revolving (being given to more members).

As the donations stand by now, Tushirikiane has been able to raise 1596 USD, which was topped up with an amount of 190 USD driven by GlobalGiving and 29 USD received as additional grants and funds. Tushirikiane )YUSA)- Community-based Organization is still going on with its activities of helping refugees from the Great Lakes region (Burundi, DR Congo and Rwanda living in Nairobi) settle in the host community and cope with life, through its main activities of education, socio-pastoral and peacebuilding activities and income-generating activities. It was in the context of income-generating activities which aim at helping refugees become self-reliant that the  project "Raising Refugees' Living Standards" was developed and launched in collaboration with GlobalGiving which helped raise the funds.

Under the project ,Tushirikiane has managed to fund three projects as mentioned in previous reports and the three projects are still running, despite the setbacks due to Covid-19 but they have all survived the pandemic.

As a reminder, the three funded projects are involved in the following businesses: bakery, tailoring and selling clothes. These were funded with a total of USD1,034 (Ksh 115,000) out of USD 1324.54 disbursed. Tushirikiane is still keeping USD 290 (Ksh 32.280). This enough for funding another project but we are still waiting for the environment to be safe enough to fund it.

Our project is still receiving donations and those received so far amount now to USD 1,741. It is also worth noting that this is a long-term project which will keep on being funded as funds are available. Income-generating activity projects are also being encouraged because they are the ones which help people become autonomous and self-reliant. Tushirikiane is also encouraging its members to focus on this kind of projects which help them not depend on donors for the satisfaction of their basic needs.

We, once again, thank each and everyone who has contributed to this project and call upon many other wellwishers to support this project by donating through GlobalGiving.

After some months without carrying some of its activities (in particular activities related to education and income-generating activities) due to Covid-19 pandemic, Tushirikiane is now starting to implement some of the suspended activities. Schools have resumed and children are benefitting from assistance and Tushirikiane is again trying to see how to resume income-generating activities on a larger scale.

As previously reported, Tushirikiane had managed to get 3 projects started and these are still going on, though sometimes facing the impact of Covid-19. However, all the three projects, like many other financed under other programmes, have managed to go on with their businesses. Just as a reminder, out of $ 1324 disbursed, Tushirikiane had spent Ksh 115,000 ( equivalent to about $ 1066) o those 3 projects before funding was suspended following the outbreak of Covid-19.

Tushirikiane is now in the process of helping members establish Self-help Groups and is considering another project to finance under this initiative with the remaining amount of about around Ksh 30,000.

In particular, the project of making doughnuts is doing well and is expanding and some pictures are attached in this report.

The Project "Raising refugees' living standards" is still being implemented and three of its projects started are going well, despite that Covid-19 has had an impact on them due to confinement measures. Fortunately, none has been  stopped. As a reminder, the three projects funded are:

1. Bakery

2. Selling Clothes in Gikomba Market

3. Tailoring

So far, the project has received $ 1324.54 (Ksh 143,103) and the three project have been funded with Ksh 115,000. which means Tushirikiane still has around Ksh 30,103.36 to start another project or boost the two already running of sellings clothes and tailoring. We are waiting for the economic activities to resume properly and the confinement measures to be lifted to do so.

Tushirikiane wishes to take this opportunity to thank all those who managed to contribute to this project and calls upon your generosity to go on donating.
