COVID-19 is devastating for everyone. But the worst affected are those who were already severely disadvantaged to begin with.

Less privileged communities are dependent on family, friends, neighbours, government programs, small businesses and NGOs like us for meeting all their daily and monthly needs. During this COVID-19 lockdown those options are severely constrained, and there is also the additional need for reliable supplies and personal protective equipment.

Since VIDYA already has a foothold and many decades worth of trust among the communities we work in inside Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, we have initiated a program to help all those we can in these difficult times as well as rapidly adapt all our programs to a tech-based medium.

About VIDYA's Webinar Series

Further, VIDYA has started a new webinar series called the "Knowledge Series". The first episode was on May 8th 2020, and our first guest was Prof. Mudalgya, one of the heads of the famous Aakash Low Cost Computing project. Our webinar is a weekly program that covers all kinds of topics related to learning, education, empowerment and wellness. It was especially designed to help people, including VIDYA ourselves, adapt and find opportunities to thrive during these tough times caused by the COVID-19 crisis. We recently hosted one of India's most renowned entrepreneurs and corporate leaders, Mr.Narayana Murthy, on our show. You can watch that incredible episode here.

We've attached some of our newsletters for these past months. Please go through them to know more about what VIDYA has been doing.

Digital Empowerment

Today, we live in the age of machines. Technology touches every single part of our lives. It is advancing at a great pace and has been pivotal to the well being and the advancement of man-kind. Digitization is at its peak - one cannot survive without learning to live with technology. Digitization can never be a success unless the fruits borne of these technological advancements benefit every section of the society. VIDYA, with its digital empowerment program, strives to train the communities in the same.

VIDYA hosted its annual TECH FEST in the month of December and January.
The fest was a great success as VIDYA was able to find its SUPER 50 - a batch of special students that have knack for technology and can help usher in a new age.The same SUPER 50 will now be given extra support and will be encouraged to participate more in the field of technology. These children are like saplings who are being nurtured by VIDYA to bloom.

When Rashmi Misra was living at the IIT Delhi campus in 1985, she used to see the same five girls from the neighboring slum playing in a stream adjacent to the campus wall. One day, she approached them and asked them why they weren't at school. They looked at each other, then at her, with incredulous expressions, and said, "don't you know girls don't go to school?"

VIDYA started then, in 1985, with Rashmi herself educating these five underprivileged girls in her apartment. Over the last 34 years VIDYA has impacted 3,75,000 people, with centers in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune. Our goal is ensuring employability and self-sufficiency for each individual whom we serve. Our programs address literacy as multifaceted - encompassing academia, vocational education, mental and physical health, life skills, social awareness, and values.

2018-2019 has been another eventful year with many new beginnings and success stories. Please take a look at our attached annual report to know more about everything we've achieved this year.

Please note that many of the names of our beneficiaries have been changed to protect their privacy, and the rest have been printed with their permission.

VIDYA is addressing the lack of quality education and empowerment opportunities for the lesser privileged children and youth in urban slum communities through holistic education programs. VIDYA runs integrated programs for Beyond School learning, Open School education and employability courses for youth. One of the programs that we run in Mumbai is called the 'Digital Empowerment Program', which is spread across many centers.

The objectives of our digital empowerment project in Mumbai are:

  • Providing Digital Literacy to children, youth and adults
  • Creating employment opportunities for youth and young adults through Digital skill development
