When Rashmi Misra was living at the IIT Delhi campus in 1985, she used to see the same five girls from the neighboring slum playing in a stream adjacent to the campus wall. One day, she approached them and asked them why they weren't at school. They looked at each other, then at her, with incredulous expressions, and said, "don't you know girls don't go to school?"

VIDYA started then, in 1985, with Rashmi herself educating these five underprivileged girls in her apartment. Over the last 33 years VIDYA has impacted 3,65,000 people, with centers in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune. Our goal is ensuring employability and self-sufficiency for each individual whom we serve. Our programs address literacy as multifaceted - encompassing academia, vocational education, mental and physical health, life skills, social awareness, and values.

2017-2018 has been another eventful year with many new beginnings and success stories. Please take a look at our attached annual report to know more about everything we've achieved this year.

A new year, new spring, new students, new ideas, new challenges and newer ways to overcome the
hurdles; that’s the order of new beginnings.

The first month of the last quarter of the academic year 2017-18 is still seeing students’ queuing up for enroll ing in courses to enhance their knowledge, better their lives, lifestyles and comforts. We are very happy and satisfied to have reached many people with the sole intention of educating, empowering and transforming lives.

Let’s begin the documented version of the month’s events with words of gratitude to all who have continuously
made valuable contribution to the VIDYA cause. Rekha Rao, Mali Foundation and Semikron have been the
means of our sheer presence in Bangalore East, thanks for the infrastructure.

Our heartiest regards to Societe Generale, AIG, Synergy, Broadcom LDSG & KKS for their support to our
mission.

It has been a great start and an even greater journey through the months of the academic year and the tides seem positive as we move ahead! This would not have been possible without the support of the extended VIDYA family, sponsors, donors and volunteers and all who have made their mark and sculpted the sculpture of success.

The second quarter witnessed a steady rise in admissions, scaling of  enthusiasm among  students, a difference in the attitude of our beneficiaries and a lot more things worth sharing. Here, have a glimpse of VIDYA in this quarter.

WE deeply appreciate our patron, MRS. RekhaRao, Mali Foundation, SEMIKRON for sharing VIDYA’s vision and passion. Many thanks to you.

Our acknowledgement goes to Synergy, Society Generale, AIG, Broadcom & LDSG for sponsoring  our programmes and in helping us achieve our goals and realize our dreams.

Do look through our attached full when you find the time.

For more than thirty two years, VIDYA's success and achievements at a country-widescale have been in large part because of the way we work- we believe that each issue requires a tailor-made solution, and each solution is a homegrown movement of its own headed by passionate teams empowered to think freely and creatively. These projects are linked to VIDYA by name, a strong common ethos and veteran leaders who think pan-VIDYA

A year ago, we decided that we could work even better and make a greater impact with just one additional change - to start a culture of collaboration and a shared vision across VIDYA. We realized there was a wealth of information collected by our teams across India, and invaluable experiences, so enabling and encouraging sharing would make a massive impact. And so, only a year later, we can confidently say we're thinking as "One VIDYA", and it's yielding great results!

First, we united our governance, finance and HR departments in one HQ across India, which has streamlined our efficiency while maintaining all the creative freedom our centers enjoy. Then, we inaugurated the VIDYA Mitr, Friends of VIDYA and Curriculum programs, which we will soon implement across all VIDYA centers. VIDYA Mitr is a mentorship program that attaches an experienced mentor to each student, to significantly increase their chance of achieving their goals. Friends of VIDYA is a center based in North America, which will lead the way in creating global leaders and sponsors for VIDYA in India. Lastly, this year we also aim to create a shared and detailed template for planning curricula, based on thirty years of experience in teaching in directly working with our beneficiaries.

VIDYA focuses on the most vulnerable members of underprivileged communities- the children, youth and women. We've gone through another year of success stories, and it's our amazing, passionate team that makes it all happen. We've compiled a report a little differently this time, keeping in mind this "One VIDYA" thrust. We think it'll give you a fantastic overview of what VIDYA has been up to, voices from those we serve, and a greater sense of our long-term goals and vision for India.

Happy reading!

Another quarter has come to a close, and as always, has left behind a lot of memories and experiences to carry ahead. We would like to begin by extending our gratitude to Mrs.Rekha Rao, Mali Foundation and Semikron for being a strong pillar of support in all our ventures. Our deepest gratitude goes to RCI, who has been with us and been a patron to the great cause that we believe in. We extend our love and appreciation to Societe Generale for their continuous patronage.

With the festival season over, it was time once again to focus on the syllabus and  the courses underway . Things have now settled down  with the regular classes and many more new students.

In October, we also started the integrated weekend course VIDYA Shakti for the domestic helpers of the large Adarsh Vista gated community. The course is a comprehensive one: Spoken English, Basic computer skills, Tailoring, Cooking,Art & craft and soft skills. We look forward to many more such batches with the employers' cooperation from different apartment blocks.

So there's a lot of news from VIDYA Bangalore this quarter!
We've attached a wondeful little newsletter to this report, for insight into what we've been doing.
