Cynnal plans to build 35 water tanks for 35 families in Tacioj, one of the poorest peasant villages in northern Argentina. The water in the area is contaminated with arsenic, causing cancer, skin damage, cardiovascular diseases, and neurotoxicity. During the rainy season, the tanks collect purified water providing 16.000 liters in their homes, avoiding people walking 2 miles to collect contaminated water.
In Tacioj and Dos Arboles, people have to walk almost 6 km. per day to collect water. That water contains levels of arsenic that make people sick. In particular, there exists a large percentage of cancer in the population as a consequence of drinking water. In addition, the warm semi-arid climate results in 2 well-defined seasons: rainy (October-March, around 450 mm/year) and dry (April-September), being insufficient for a family.
Cynnal will build 35 cistern tanks for 35 families in Tacioj and Dos Arboles. These tanks collect 16.000 liters of rainwater. The tank follows the INTA model and has been proven to be a very effective solution throughout the region. How does it work? The water is collected and stored through a zinc sheet roof. As it is rainwater is not contaminated with arsenic. The tank being closed prevents contact with external agents, reducing bacteriological contamination.
The project will provide purified water for 400 people improving their quality of life, which generates in them the basic conditions for planning a sustainable life.
