Gondar is in the north of Ethiopia. The city has a high mortality rate of pregnant women and children under one year of age, exceeding the average for African countries. Since 2013 we have been working with Ayme NGO to build and maintain The Mulu Maternity Center, reducing the mortality rates because women can now have prenatal controls, give birth or attend during the puerperium stage. We need help to maintain the regular expenses and guarantee electricity for surgeries, helping 6000 people.
The Mulu Maternity Center has a complete operating room with adequate medical equipment to use in case there are issues during labour but, at this moment, there are high costs of maintenence and there are continuous power outages that affect the whole center and make it impossible to operate in these circumstances.
Mensajeros de la Paz wants to keep helping the Mulu Maternity Center with supplies and we want to buy a generator that will allow establishing a stable direct electrical current that will guarantee continuous supply, despite power outages that may exist in the power line.
Helping with supplies and specially with the generator, all the equipment can be operational continuously at it will be possible to attend a greater number of women, girls and boys on a daily basis, expanding the free health coverage provided by the maternity center. Also, it will not be necessary to transfer pregnant women to Gondar University Hospital when a complication arises that requires surgical intervention during labour avoiding risks during the transfer.
