For almost ten years, Kato lived with a hernia he couldn’t afford to treat. A resident of Lubya Sub-county in Buvuma District, Kato is one of many people in rural Uganda for whom cost alone puts even basic healthcare out of reach.
“We don’t have the money needed for regular medical check-ups,” he explains. “At my age, I would probably need to earn around UGX 300,000 (about USD 80) to afford that kind of healthcare. But where can I get a job that pays me that much?”
Because of your support, Kato didn’t have to find that money. When a free surgical camp came to Buvuma Health Centre IV, he registered, was screened, and — after nearly a decade of waiting — finally received the surgery he needed, on September 14, 2026.
The very next day, he was already feeling the difference. “Ever since I got the surgery, I’m feeling much better and much happier,” he said. “This opportunity came like a gift to me. A blessing to me.”
Kato was treated through the Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU) Annual Surgical Camp 2026, an initiative aiming to deliver more than 3,500 free surgeries across 10 districts in the Buganda Region. Bulamu Healthcare International is proud to support this effort alongside ASOU, Uganda’s Ministry of Health, Buganda Kingdom, and local health facilities and medical teams — bringing surgical care directly to communities where it has long been out of reach.
Donors like you made Kato’s surgery possible, and he wanted you to know it. “I am thankful to the Ministry of Health and all the partners for giving people like us, who cannot afford these services, an opportunity to receive healthcare free of charge,” he said.
He also had a message for others who heard about the camp but couldn’t make it in time: “Opportunities like this do not come often... Those of us who came and received care are going home feeling blessed and happy.”
Every gift to this project helps make moments like this possible — a decade of pain ended, and a future opened back up. Thank you for being part of it.
“God bless Bulamu and all the partners for bringing this service to us.”
