Surgery Report SI-camps to-date BulamuHealthcare

By Dr. Andrew Mukeye | Director Surgery Programs BulamuHealthcare

Surgery report 4/20/2026

Globally two thirds of the world population do not have access to safe, timely and affordable
surgical care; 30% of the global health conditions require surgical care; 17 million people die
annually from conditions that could easily be treated with surgery; but less than 1% of health
funding goes to surgical care. There is scanty statistics from Uganda but there is a huge surgical
backlog with some of the beneficiaries at our surgical camps revealing having lived with their
surgical conditions for over 20 years prior to receiving surgical care. We continue to diligently
address the critical surgical backlog through high-volume camps and specialized referrals.
From 2020 to our most recent surgical in April 2026 where we operated 420 patients, we have
provided 18,904 life-changing operations through 32 regional surgical camps, referrals to
specialized surgical centers under the angel program and our partnership with the Association of
Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU). These interventions not only restore health but also protect
thousands of families from catastrophic healthcare costs they cannot afford, enabling many
patients to return to productive lives.

Through the Angel Program which takes care of children below 18 years who need specialized
care that cannot be accessed at our surgical camps, we have provided life-changing specialized
surgeries for 1,339 children from all over Uganda with complex conditions like hydrocephalus at
specialized hospitals, covering all costs, including post-operation care, follow-up surgeries,
transport from their home districts, and facilitation for the caretakers, sparing families from
catastrophic costs they can’t afford.

We have 4 more surgical camps planned for the remaining part of this year. We are grateful
to our funders who make these surgeries possible. May the good Lord bless you abundantly
as you continue to put smiles on more faces.
