1. Project Summary

The Provide Clean Water to Families in Goma project aims to improve access to safe drinking water for more than 5,000 people in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. It plans to construct five solar-powered boreholes in vulnerable neighborhoods where families still rely on unsafe water sources such as Lake Kivu and untreated rainwater.

This project responds to an urgent water crisis and the spread of waterborne diseases that severely affect children and women.

2. Context and Justification

In Goma, access to clean water remains a major challenge. A large part of the population is forced to consume unsafe water from Lake Kivu, which is exposed to bacteria, microbes, and natural risks linked to its volcanic environment. This situation leads to a high prevalence of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and respiratory infections.

Women and children are the most affected: women walk long distances to collect water, while children are often exposed to illness or forced to abandon school to help their families.

3. Project Objectives

Provide safe and accessible drinking water to over 5,000 people
Reduce waterborne diseases in targeted communities
Relieve women and children from the burden of water collection
Improve health, education, and living conditions of families
Strengthen community resilience through sustainable infrastructure
Identification of borehole sites in priority neighborhoods
Installation of five solar-powered boreholes

The total project budget is estimated at USD 75,000.
To date, USD 26 has been raised through collaboration with GlobalGiving and initial donor support.

6. Current Status

The project is currently in the preparation and structuring phase. We are working on:

Identification of trainers
Selection of local trainees
Finalization of intervention sites
Strengthening community partnerships

The project implementation is planned to begin progressively starting in November 2025, depending on funding availability.

7. Partnerships

Title: Safe Water for Goma Families

Introduction

In the city of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, access to clean water remains one of the most urgent challenges. Most families still rely on Lake Kivu or rainwater—both contaminated with harmful bacteria and dangerous substances. This situation exposes women and children in particular to serious illnesses such as diarrhea, cholera, and respiratory infections.
Faced with this emergency, our project aims to provide a sustainable, safe, and accessible solution.

Project Objective

The Provide Clean Water to Families in Goma project aims to supply clean drinking water to more than 5,000 people through the construction of five secure boreholes. Each borehole will be equipped with a solar-powered system, easy to maintain and capable of serving over 2,000 people.

Problem Statement

Reliance on contaminated Lake Kivu water
Widespread waterborne diseases
Long daily walks, mainly for women and children
Lack of durable infrastructure to ensure constant access to safe water

Project Approach

Construction of five boreholes in strategic neighborhoods of Goma.
Solar-powered systems to ensure stable and affordable operation.
Community training: the identification of trainers and learners is already underway to support local and sustainable management.
Implementation scheduled for November 2025.
Community monitoring supported by local partners to ensure proper maintenance.

Résumé du projet

À Goma, en République démocratique du Congo, plus de 5 000 personnes vivent sans accès fiable à l'eau potable. La plupart des familles dépendent de sources contaminées comme le lac Kivu et des eaux de pluie stagnantes, ce qui entraîne des épidémies généralisées de maladies d'origine hydrique comme le choléra, la diarrhée aiguë et les infections respiratoires.

Notre projet vise à forer cinq forages d'eau potable dans les quartiers les plus touchés de Goma. Ces forages alimentés à l'énergie solaire fourniront à long terme une eau propre, de proximité et à un prix abordable à plus de 10 000 personnes.

Objectifs

Réduire considérablement les maladies d’origine hydrique.
Réduire la mortalité infantile liée à l’eau insalubre.
Libérez les femmes et les enfants du fardeau des longs et dangereux trajets pour aller chercher de l’eau.
Améliorer la fréquentation scolaire, en particulier chez les filles.
Renforcer la résilience et la dignité de la communauté.

Phase actuelle : Identification des formateurs et des bénéficiaires.
Début prévu : novembre 2025.
Plan d'infrastructures : 5 forages d'eau alimentés à l'énergie solaire.
Population cible directe : 5 000 personnes.

Nous travaillons en étroite collaboration avec des partenaires locaux pour assurer la formation de la communauté, la maintenance du système et les campagnes de sensibilisation, garantissant ainsi la durabilité du projet.
