During this reporting period, our team continued uninterrupted protection and monitoring activities in the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary through the constant presence of the patrol vessel Silky. Thanks to continuous operations, we are now reaching nearly 90% annual coverage of the protected area, with interruptions occurring only when essential maintenance must be carried out on land. This sustained presence has proven critical for long-term conservation and effective protection of this remote marine sanctuary.
Since the last report, the crew has maintained a minimum of two patrols per day around the island and surrounding waters. While no fishing vessels have been detected—reflecting the effectiveness of continuous deterrence—the team continues to remove floating debris carried by ocean currents, helping to reduce marine pollution and associated risks to wildlife. Daily patrols ensure that Malpelo remains under constant observation, even when no direct threats are visible.
Most importantly, we are observing clear biological signs of ecosystem recovery. There has been a noticeable increase in the presence of tiger sharks, a species that was rarely seen in this area in the past. In addition, schools of Galapagos sharks continue to grow in size, a change that is now evident not only to our crew but also to visiting scientists, park staff, and tourists. These changes reflect a positive shift in population abundance and structure, indicating improving ecosystem health.
These encouraging results are a direct outcome of sustained protection and the long-term support we have received. Continuous patrols, combined with donor commitment, are allowing shark populations to recover and Malpelo to remain a safe refuge for marine life. Your support is helping ensure that this recovery continues into the future.
