This campaign strengthens marine surveillance in the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, Colombia-one of the most biodiverse marine areas on Earth and a critical refuge for sharks in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. With your support, we will continue operating the Silky catamaran to remove ghost fishing gear, deter illegal fishing, and protect endangered species such as hammerhead sharks.
Multiple shark species listed under CITES Appendix II-such as hammerhead, silky, and thresher sharks-are experiencing rapid population declines due to illegal fishing and the international fin trade. Malpelo Sanctuary, a key migratory route and aggregation site, faces increasing threats from longlines and ghost gear that entangle and kill marine life. Without constant monitoring, these threats continue to undermine global conservation efforts.
With the Silky catamaran and a dedicated team, we carry out daily patrols and remove harmful gear from the ocean. This constant presence has led to a 95% reduction in illegal fishing since 2018. We aim to sustain and expand this critical protection.
By maintaining consistent protection of Malpelo's waters, this project contributes to the recovery of endangered shark populations and the resilience of the Eastern Tropical Pacific marine corridor. Long-term impact includes healthier marine ecosystems, enhanced regional biodiversity, reduced illegal fishing networks, and strengthened international conservation leadership by Colombia.
