Lina and Angie, united by the same goal!

By Catalina Alvarez | Project manager

The International Marathon of Medellín took place the last September the 8th. United for Colombia with Achilles International Organization and the support of the US Embassy in Colombia sponsored a group of 120 landmine survivors to participate in the event. It was really thrilling to have in the same place people from all different regions of Colombia with similar stories and the same desire: to keep walking!

We would like to share two of the most remarkable stories:

Lina. At the age of 4 months she was victim of a lost bullet due to a gunfight between the Colombian Army and Rebel forces near her house at Loboguerrero, close to Buenaventura, Valle. Lina’s first prosthesis was sponsored by the foundation at the age of 4 years old, and since then, the foundation has been in charge of her prosthesis maintenance on a yearly basis. Nowadays Lina is15 years old, she is in 9th grade and aspires to become a Model.

Angie. At the age of 9, while she was walking with four other members of her family while coming back from visiting her aunt, Angie accidently stepped on a landmine near her house in San Pablo, South Bolivar, where she still lives. The accident caused the amputation of her right leg. Since the moment of accident, United for Colombia has provided her prosthetic leg and the annual maintenance. At this moment, Angie is 20 years old and would like to study Psychology.

These two stories fill us of joy and hope!
