Project Stand Up Youth Leadership Program
Project Report_GlobalGiving
October 2021
This is an update for our GlobalGiving Donors who have kindly supported our Youth Leadership Program (YLP) project.
What is YLP?
PSU has designed YLP to enable refugee youth living in Malaysia to become leaders in their community, through transformative peer to peer training. Using a human-centered design approach, YLP builds the soft skills of young refugees, boosting their capacities to identify and solve the challenges their communities face. YLP has been designed and is implemented by the Project Stand Up team, who are refugee youth themselves and aim to inspire youth to become change agents. With these unprecedented times, we decided to do our YLP program for the first time fully online!
What have we achieved since your donation?
Our youth from the Youth Leadership Program ( YLP ) cohort 2 have completed their capstone project and delivered it to 6 youth from different communities, and it was very successful for it being their first project. Their capstone project talked about mental health issues, and stress coping mechanisms. The members of cohort 2 were happy and proud of what they did. Despite the fact that we were still in lockdown that didn’t stop us from celebrating their success in completing YLP cohort 2, so we held their graduation ceremony online and they were so delighted and appreciative towards what we did for them, it meant a lot to them.
We have started our cohort 3 of our YLP program in September, this time we have a diverse group of youth with different backgrounds and different stories. We have successfully trained them on module 1 and we are about to start module 2 with them. Lastly we have started training the YLP coach on the modules before they are delivered to the members and we are providing all the support that the coach needs.
How have we been impacted by Covid-19?
Although in Malaysia we are still under the movement restriction order (MCO). Many of the restrictions are now in the process of being lifted, as more people are vaccinated now compared to previous months. To protect our members and minimize any risks, we are still continuing our YLP course online. However, we are hoping to have our graduation ceremony at our hub next year in January. Good news is that starting from this month, we will be operating from our hub space and we are so excited! No more working online :)
What are our next steps for YLP?
Our next steps for YLP are, 1. To finish training the participants on all the modules. We are almost half way through training them on the 4 modules, 2. We are planning to hold a graduation ceremony after they complete all their 4 modules and deliver their capstone project, 3. Lastly as part of our next step, we are planning to expand our youth network to include youth from different communities to do the YLP program. Not only that, but also do at least 2 to 3 more cohorts of YLP in 2022.
What else does PSU do?
In September, we volunteered with the Malaysian Red Crescent Society team (MRCS) and the Somali Refugee Centre (SRC) to vaccinate 950 people, about more than half of them were members from our community.
It has been an incredibly heartwarming experience for us. We were proud that people from our community came forward to get the vaccines, especially after they had fears and concerns regarding the safety of the vaccine, but that didn’t stop them!
We have also been working with Empower and Two Book Nerds Talking (TBNT) on an exciting podcast about sharing refugee stories!!
Abeera and Yusra from our team will share a story about the dreams of 2 young refugee girls that were created in collaboration with the TBNT project team.
The first episode will be out on Friday on 8th October. Click on the link provided to listen to the podcast.

What have we achieved since your donation?
Our Youth Leadership online recruitment process in February wasn’t easy, but we got 8 amazing young people join us in their journey to become role models in their communities.
At first, the difficulties we faced during recruitment were different time schedules for the participants, a lot of them were studying, and some working.
Our members have trained more than 2 months so far, and completed 3 modules successfully!
All our 8 members are talented, we will introduce to you the members who were the most outstanding in each module.
David won the best essay writer in module one, he is very active during the sessions and does not hesitate to participate in the activities. We are so proud of him and the progress he is making.
Umeima won the best presenter for our public speaking session. She showed the best progress since the start of the training. Though she faced difficulties with her English communication, she managed to impress us with her confidence in conveying her message.
In module 3, Saif showed the best leadership amongst the members. He led his team during the insights session, he asked each member to contribute their opinions. We have high expectations of his performance during the capstone project phase.
Your kind donation has helped us to invest the time and resources in constantly improving and updating our curriculum to ensure the best impact for our members. The coach is now able to effortlessly facilitate and manage the training and make sure the members have a fruitful learning experience, thanks to your donation.
How have we been impacted by Covid-19?
All the members conduct their training online with the coach. The third lockdown hit Malaysia in May as numbers of covid-19 cases have been on the rise. This makes us a bit sad thinking that we wanted to hold the graduation in our hub. We will keep being hopeful and pray that the situation gets better all around the world, in case if this does not go the way we plan we will go for a live stream and send the certificate with some gift to the members.
What are our next steps for YLP?
The coach is preparing the members for their capstone project that is due in July. As the members are working hard learning and executing, our team prepares for cohort 3 the next YLP group that will join us after the successful graduation of the current members and our next cohort is due to start in August this year.
What else does PSU do?
We are busy with other initiatives too. We run workshops on topics such as gender equity, empowerment, youth-adult partnerships, allyship with refugees ‘work with us, not for us’ and integration. We also attend webinars and write blogs to raise awareness on these topics. You can read our latest blogs here.

What have we achieved since your donation?
We have successfully completed our YLP program’s first cohort in late October 2020. 8 youth participated in our YLP- 6 month-long program. We surveyed the members before and after the program and we have analyzed the data, which gave us some really promising results and confidence that our program works!
Based on the data collected, participants of the program showed improvements in all of the key areas of the program, including confidence, teamwork, communication, and leadership. Participants showed particular improvements in professional communication with 2 out of 3 members reporting improvements in their communication skills. Similarly, the members have also developed their teamwork skills, where every 1 out of 2 have stated they are now more capable of working with different aged people. This is an important skill to have, as it allows them to have professional communication with adults and youth.
After our first cohort graduated, we have designed our YLP program to suit online needs for the first time. We understand that in order to continue doing what we do, we need to adapt to the current circumstances of the pandemic like every institution conducting its work online. It is a challenge, but we managed to try it, and it worked!
We have done our first online workshop in January to understand better how to adapt our content and test our modules for an online format. We also have done live Q&A on our social media pages to promote YLP online program which will start in February 2021. Pictures below.
We have opened the applications for youth to apply and join our YLP program. Our team was busy recruiting and interviewing applicants that suit our program criteria. We are still in this process, we hope to start our pre-requisite phase in 3rd week of February 2021.
How have we been impacted by Covid-19?
Because of COVID-19 we are no longer able to meet in person. This has meant that we have had to move all of our work and our YLP program online. To do this we have had to test and adapt our modules for the program to make them suitable for an online format. Our online program will launch in February. We anticipate we will need to make changes and adapt as we learn more about what works well and does not work as we deliver the program over the year.
What are our next steps for YLP?
We are planning to start our second cohort of YLP in February. The program will be entirely online. Our aim is to have 30 youth participate in the program in 2021 and develop skills that will help them become change-makers in their community

Our latest interview was with New Naratif a journalist on refugee education in Malaysia. Make sure to read their article to gain insights on different initiatives that are also creating more opportunities for the refugee youth in Malaysia.

What have we achieved since your donation?
We are about to complete the program for our first cohort of 8 youth. They have successfully completed all the modules and are now in the process of completing their capstone project. To design their project we asked them to ‘Map their community’ an activity where they identified youth disengagement as an issue. They decided to organise workshops for youth who are 16+ years old in their community. Their aim is to do 6 different workshops for youth, which includes public speaking, mental health, self defense, arts and crafts, photography, and bring a life coach who empowers youth to work together. The youth will graduate from the programme and we will celebrate their achievements.
You can see a photo of one of these workshops the YLP members organised focused on mental health.
How have we been impacted by Covid-19?
Unfortunately, we had to pause the program for 5 months due to Covid-19 and the restrictions set by the Malaysian government but now we are back up and running with the necessary health and safety processes to keep our members safe.
What are our next steps for YLP?
We are planning our next cohort of YLP youth which we hope to start in January, hopefully earlier if we are able to. Our aim is to train 30 youth to be change makers in their community by the end of 2021, your donations will help us to achieve our mission.
