1. Introduction
As part of the preparatory phase for the implementation of the Reviving Hope – Prosthetic Limbs Manufacturing and Fitting Project in northern Syria (Idlib and Aleppo), the project team carried out an initial field survey targeting a group of amputees who are potential beneficiaries of the project.
The objective of this survey was to assess humanitarian and medical needs, living and economic conditions, and access to prosthetic services, as well as to better understand the psychological and social impact of limb loss.
2. Survey Methodology
- The survey was conducted through direct, face-to-face interviews with potential beneficiaries.
- The questionnaire focused on:
- Type and cause of amputation
- Availability or absence of a previous prosthetic limb
- Household economic conditions
- Ability to work, move, and live independently
- Psychological and social impact resulting from disability
3. Key Findings of the SurveyA. Humanitarian and Medical Situation
- All surveyed individuals suffer from permanent disabilities resulting from the armed conflict or the February 2023 earthquake.
- The majority do not have any prosthetic limbs, or only possess outdated or unusable devices.
- Limb loss has led to:
- Loss of livelihoods and income
- Complete dependence on family members
- Severe psychological distress and social isolation
B. Economic Situation
- Most potential beneficiaries live below the poverty line.
- None of them have the financial capacity to afford prosthetic limbs, which are prohibitively expensive given their lack of income.
4. Fundraising Results
In parallel with the survey process, an initial fundraising effort was launched to support the implementation of the project.
However, the results to date are as follows:
- Total funds raised so far: USD 40 only
5. Funding Gap Analysis
The amount raised so far is completely insufficient to initiate project implementation for the following reasons:
- The cost of manufacturing and fitting a single prosthetic limb exceeds several hundred US dollars.
- The project targets 100 beneficiaries, in addition to covering training, psychosocial support, follow-up, staffing, and operational costs.
- The total estimated budget required for the project is USD 112,200.
Accordingly, the amount raised to date:
- Does not cover even the minimum costs of medical assessment.
- Does not allow for the launch of any implementation phase.
- Clearly highlights the significant gap between urgent humanitarian needs and currently available funding.
6. Conclusion
The results of the survey clearly demonstrate that:
- The need for prosthetic limbs among amputees in northern Syria is urgent and critical.
- Potential beneficiaries have no alternative solutions or personal resources.
- The project represents a real opportunity to restore dignity, mobility, and self-reliance for affected individuals and their families.
- The current low level of funding does not reflect the scale of suffering or the importance of the intervention.
7. Call to Donors and Supporters
We call upon individuals, institutions, and donors to support the Reviving Hope Project and contribute to:
- Restoring mobility and independence for amputees
- Improving mental health and social inclusion
- Reducing the burden on families and communities
- Building sustainable local capacity in prosthetic services
Every contribution, no matter the size, can make a real difference in the life of someone who lost a limb due to war.
