Beyond Resilience
Resilience is one of the most overused words in our language.
We celebrate people who overcome extraordinary obstacles, and we should. But perhaps the more important question is why so much depended on one person's ability to hold everything together in the first place.
What would have happened if the support around them had been stronger from the start? That's a question we think about often as we work alongside public schools in rural Kenya. It's also the question your generosity through the Possibility Fund helps us answer every single day.
The Students We Don't Always See
When people talk about barriers to education, the conversation often centres on girls. Rightly so. Yet as we've spent time listening to principals, teachers, and families, another story has emerged.
Boys are disappearing too.
Not always dramatically. Sometimes it begins with a few missed days, then a few more, until one day a student simply doesn't return. Around the age of 11 or 12, many boys begin carrying responsibilities no child should have to shoulder. They leave school to work, to care for family members, or simply because surviving becomes more urgent than studying.
Recently, one of our partner school principals shared the story of a young man who made a different choice.
Thomas's Story
When Thomas's* parents moved back to their home village, he didn't go with them. He stayed because he wasn't finished with school. Thomas was 15 at the time.
For the next 18 months, he quietly figured out how to survive while continuing his education. He found places to sleep. He searched for food. He found ways to pay school fees. He studied for exams while navigating pressures that would overwhelm many adults.
He Didn't Make It Alone
But he wasn't completely alone. His teachers rallied around him. They did what they could to make sure he was safe, that he had food when he needed it, and that he received extra academic support so he could keep up with his studies despite everything happening outside the classroom.
His principal looked for ways to strengthen his future, too. Recognizing both his character and his ability, he arranged opportunities for the young man to tutor younger students in science and mathematics. It gave him purpose, built his confidence, and strengthened his university application.
Today, Thomas is studying at university and building a future that once seemed impossible.
What Strong Schools Do
Thomas's determination is inspiring.
So is the school community that refused to let him carry the burden alone.
But it also raises an uncomfortable question. Why did it have to be that hard?
For every student who finds a way through, there are many others facing similar circumstances who don't. Not because they lack intelligence or motivation, but because the weight becomes too great without someone noticing, encouraging, and supporting them before they reach a breaking point.
The principals we partner with tell us that strong schools do far more than deliver lessons. They provide stability when life at home is uncertain. They create belonging when families are struggling. They become places where trusted adults notice when something has changed and can respond before a student quietly slips away. That is exactly what your gift helps build.

Through the Possibility Fund, you're helping schools become places that can hold students when life becomes uncertain. Your generosity helps construct and equip early childhood classrooms where children begin their education with strong foundations. It creates opportunities for students to experience educational field trips that expand what's possible in their minds. It equips teachers and principals through practical leadership training. And it supports student wellbeing initiatives that help schools identify and respond to challenges before they become reasons for a child to leave school altogether.
Because of you, schools are becoming stronger, teachers are becoming better equipped, and more students have adults who notice, care, and act when they need support most.
One exciting example is a new wellness and safeguarding initiative we're now beginning to roll out. Thanks to your generosity, we're strengthening the systems, skills, and response pathways schools need to recognize concerns early and respond with confidence and care. It's an important next step in helping schools become even safer places for children to learn, grow, and thrive. We'll share much more about this important work in our next update.
These investments may not always produce dramatic headlines, but together they create something incredibly powerful: schools that are equipped to keep children learning, growing, and believing in their future.
A Different Kind of Success
Thomas's story reminds us what becomes possible when a student refuses to give up—and a school refuses to give up on him.
